Graduate School Provision Over the Olympic Period

Throughout the Olympic and Paralympics Games period, as you are probably aware, it is likely that it will take much longer for staff and students to travel to the two main University sites and that once there heightened levels of security may mean it takes longer to move around campus.

The Graduate School are taking steps to ensure that you can continue to submit your hard copy theses over the Olympic and Paralympics Games period.

Opening Hours

A member of staff will be available in the Graduate School on the Docklands Campus (EB1.43) every Wednesday throughout the Olympic period (11th July 2012, 18th July 2012, 25th July 2012, 1st  August 2012, 8th  August 2012) between the hours of 10.00am and 16.00pm, to take receipt of theses.

Throughout the Paralympic period a member of staff will be available on Tuesday 28th August 2012, Wednesday 29th August 2012 and Tuesday 4th September 2012.

If you wish to come to the Docklands campus to submit your thesis please email Caroline Lake at c.lake@uel.ac.uk with your full name, UEL student number and the date and time you would like to come on-campus to submit. Security will be notified of your intention to be on campus on that particular date.

Alternatively, the University’s post room will be operational throughout the Games period, with only short delays expected, so theses can be posted to:

Electronic Submission

As you are aware, the University has recently chosen to accept amended and final versions of the thesis in electronic format. Consequently the only hard copies that must come to the Graduate School are initial submissions that are made prior to the viva.

Further guidance and advice relating to electronic submission can be found at: http://www.uel.ac.uk/gradschool/current/ElectronicSubmission.htm.

Key Dates

Below are a list of key dates for the Olympics and Paralympics period and links to UEL’s Olympic website, TFL’s Olympic website and the Official Olympic Games transport pages which you may find useful when trying to access UEL’s sites:

7 May – Exams

2-6 July – Exam re-sits

2 July – First partners arrive. Access to some parts of the campuses, including SportsDock, will be restricted from 9 July.

27 July – Libraries physically closed (see http://www.uel.ac.uk/lls/libraryandolympics/) but all online and telephone services are fully available. All UEL student access to other London libraries are fully available (however please check in advance if you want to use libraries anywhere within five miles of central London).

27 July – 12 August – Olympic Games. Students are very strongly encouraged to make alternative arrangements to coming on to campus due to the travel disruption and limited staff on campus. If you need access to campus during this time, please notify your registrar in advance, as he/she will need to ensure there is sufficient cover and that the appropriate facilities are made available. Don’t forget to carry your student ID card at all times as there are heightened security measures on campus. Please check back with your school in May to check what arrangements have been made based on the requirements put forward by students in your school. Please be aware that journeys from outside east London to either Docklands or Stratford could take up to three hours during this period. This could be increased by up to a further hour if there is inclement weather.

13 August – Libraries re-open. Full on-site service and full continuation of online services.

29 August – 9 September – Paralympic Games This period will involve lower levels of disruption than during the Olympic Games, but still a higher level of disruption than normal at this time of the year.

12 September – All partners vacated. Students have access to all parts of the campuses.

17 September – New student induction
