Brief biography:
I graduated with a degree in Sociology from the North-East London Poytechnic in 1980. After working as a Research Assistant for Professor Mike Rustin (then Head of Department) I went to Leeds University to research the formation of an urban ruling class in 19th-century Sheffield. Part-time teaching at both Leeds and the by now renamed Polytechnic of East London slowed down the production of the thesis to 1990. I have also worked as tutor-councillor and Summer School tutor for the Open University. In my time at UEL I have been programme leader for the undergraduate programmes in sociology and psychosocial studies as well as the Master of Research. At various points in the past ten years I have been the Learning and Teaching Leader and then the Quality Leader in the old School of Social Sciences, Quality Leader in the School of Social Sciences, Media and Cultural Studies and then the Graduate School. From 1996-2005 I was an elected member of the Governing body of UEL
