Friday ObodoStudent Governor - Friday Obodo

I had my early education in Port Harcourt, capital of Rivers State, Nigeria. Subsequently went to the University of Port Harcourt Medical School in 2009 before gaining a scholarship to study in the United Kingdom. Prior to my pre-medical study, I served as a head teacher in a private primary school (Child care Nursery/Primary school).

I am a current Forensic Science student in the University of East London. My strong interest in students’ welfare nurtured me for proficiency, hence an active member of the University of East London students’ union. I served the union as Ethics & Environment Officer. Currently, I am the student Governor. While serving as Ethics and Environment officers, I organised a successful green week event, represented the union in an EAUC Conference in York University, won an NUS bronze award for students’ union and effectively engaged in various activities of the union.

Susan ParkinSusan Parkin

After leaving school at 18 I had a small number of clerical/administration positions.  In 1988 I joined Abbey National Building Society as a cashier progressing to a senior customer services assistant and customer service manager.  I worked in North West London and then locally in Canning Town, Upton Park and East Ham.  In 1999 I started working part-time for a Solicitor in East Ham as a clerical assistant/cashier.  The Solicitors were a local agent for Bradford & Bingley Building Society.  I remained there until July 2003 when I joined UEL working at the Student Information Centre at Stratford.  I have remained in the same position, although the SIC was renamed Student Services Helpdesk in recent years after a re-structure.

Shortly after starting at the University I joined Unison.  A few months later I joined the Branch Executive Committee as Publicity Officer.  In 2008 I became Branch Secretary.  I have recently completed Stage 1 Union Representative training provided by the TUC.   In my capacity as Secretary I am the Union representative on the JSCNC and Health & Safety Committee.

During my day to day duties I deal with numerous and various enquires from students.  I am currently leading a project along with a colleague in Student Money Advice and Rights Team to find ways of supporting our students with children.   This is a vulnerable group who we have both found have to juggle their lives to be able to study and progress.

Outside work I am a leader of a Girls’ Brigade Company and am due to be commissioned as an Officer in the New Year.  I am also the Treasurer.   I have previously held the position of Treasurer for a local Gingerbread group and have also been an assistant cub leader.

In March 2011 I finished my five year term as Community Governor at Northbury Infant School in Barking.
