Geo-Information Studies

The Centre for Geo-Information Studies focuses on research. Key themes are GIS and environmental modelling, spatial data quality, data mining and location-based services. 'Environmental modelling' is interpreted broadly as empirical, AI or computational process models of any aspect of the physical, biological, social or economic environment that can be coupled with GIS and other geocomputational tools. In data mining we have developed new approaches to data normalisation (robust normalisation) and spatial clustering (GeoProZone) that are particularly effective in identifying 'hotspots'. New areas of research focus on location-based services for which we have recently won a SRIF grant. Our PhD students are researching such diverse areas the implications of data quality on oil spill modelling, finding improved methods of topographic description for hydrological models to data mining traffic accident hotspots for improved road engineering. Within the university we collaborate with researchers from Innovation Studies, Computing & Technology, Health & Biosciences and the Centre for Institutional Studies.
