  Olympic Games Impact Study (Pre-Games) – London 2012

Olympic Games Impact (OGI) is based on a set of 120 defined indicators spread across the three internationally recognised areas of sustainable development: economic, socio-cultural, and environmental. This study provides a record both of the individual nature of each Olympiad and its host context, and a database of information that is common to all Olympic Games and Paralympic Games. By this means the International Olympic Committee (IOC) will build up a detailed and tangible information base on the effects and legacy of each Games. For London 2012 Games, documentation and evaluation of OGI indicators are developed for the period 2003 to 2010 which helps in understanding the trends and any observable impacts for the city, region and country arising from being a Host City.

  Modelling Population Growth and Strategic Change Impacts on Healthcare Demand, Cost and Accessibility

This study develops a comprehensive methodology for integrating health care planning with other service planning. It provides tools and expertise to answer MKSM questions in relation to health planning now and in the future. It develops the capacity and capability in the MKSM region to use the tools and develops expertise to answer questions over time. In this project, research are conducted on polulation modelling and accessibility modelling by middle and small area geography. MKSM refers to Milton Keynes South Midlands which covers a wide area of Luton PCT, Milton Keynes PCT, Bedfordshire PCT, Northamptonshire PCT and Buckinghamshire PCT.

  London Borough Haringey Population Estimates/Projection and Health Facilities Accessibility

A study of population in Haringey has been carried out, firstly to look at the change between 2001 and 2007 and secondly to project forward to 2016 with a snapshot of 2021. The team has also looked at spatial accessibility to a limited number of health services as a way of accessing and visualising the fit between supply (location and capacity of services) and demand (population). This study will support local health infrastructure planning.

  GIS Pilot
      funded by Business Link in London

This is a pilot study to understand the potential for GIS to realise tangible business benefits for Business Link in London (BLIL). A geographical analysis of London’s business environment from different perspectives (using BLIL’s internal data integrated with other external secondary sources) is presented as a demonstration of the usefulness of map representations. A number of Business Questions generated by BLIL staff are then worked through using GIS as a ‘proof of concept’. The responses also illustrate the versatility of GIS in providing manipulation and visualisations of data. A skills audit has been carried out and a training programme has been designed.

  Exploratory Analysis of A&E Data

An exploratory analysis has been carried out of 32 months of data from the Trust’s three A&E departments in conjunction with other contextualising data garnered from a number of government and private sector sources. It includes a temporal analysis for identifying temporal periodicies within the admissions, a geographical analysis for exploring a number of lifestyle and life condition segmentations of the A&E data, a repeats analysis for separating and profiling single and repeat user patients, and an analysis of patients with no or unknown GP.

  Scoping of Demographic Data for the SHAPE Toolkit

Strategic Health Asset Planning Evaluation (SHAPE) is a web-enabled, evidence-based application, which is designed to support the strategic planning of services and physical assets across a whole health economy in the NHS. This scoping study addresses the demographic data and mapping component of the SHAPE toolkit. Provision of an increased number of demographic data sets is recommended to provide a more up-to-date picture presented as counts, percentages and densities (as appropriate). Geographic data structure is also recommended to allow for a finer resolution and compatibility with administrative geographies. New functionalities of data analysis and mapping are designed to improve the demographic profiling and visualisation. Future proofing is important to maintain currency of the toolkit and recommendations have been made on how this can be achieved.

  Spatial Analysis of Accessibility to Health Services in Greater London
      funded by NHS London Healthy Urban Development Unit

This study carries out spatial analysis of accessibility along with demographic variables to health and health related services with the objective of contributing such analyses to the modelling and planning of social infrastructure at the level of the Primary Care Trust (PCT). The study area is Greater London, with the analyses carried out at the highest practical resolution, this being census Output Areas (OA). The facilities to be analysed are: GP surgeries, dental surgeries, pharmacies, opticians, A&E, general hospitals and bus stops (as an example of access to the public transport network). Interaction over the results with one or more PCTs is also part of the study to gauge the practical use of the analyses, to consider useful extensions to these types of analyses, and to evaluate how the data might be accessed through, for example, on-line planning tools such as the Strategic Health Asset Planning and Evaluation application (SHAPE) developed by the Department of Health. The two PCTs that have engaged with the study are Hillingdon in the west and Havering in the east.

  Evidencing Adaptable Sustainability (EASY)

Project EASY, led by the Centre, is funded by HEFCE and DIUS through the UrbanBuzz programme. This study uses a wide range of available administrative and other data sets to construct for each Borough an integrated evidence base of demographic, social and cultural change by small area geography. It develops micro-simulation models for the Boroughs that will produce demographic projections by small area geography, but also managing the uncertainties in the base data. It promotes the use of the evidence base and the demographic projections in support of social infrastructure planning in the Boroughs. It delivers the necessary knowledge transfer through capacity building and skills enhancement in the Boroughs in order to make these sustainable activities so that Local Authorities can continue to monitor change and adapt their social infrastructure arrangements to meet those changes..

  Social-environmental disorder and urban configuration (SEDUC)
      funded by HEIF3 of HEFCE and Department for Innovation, Universities &Skills

Project SEDUC, led by the Centre, is funded by HEFCE and DIUS through the UrbanBuzz programme to work initially, in partnership, with the London Boroughs of Tower Hamlets, Newham and Barking & Dagenham. This study puts in place automated methods of data preparation and geocoding of ‘FLARE’ type data sets (anti social behaviour) ready for analysis. It promotes the generic use of space syntax software in planning and specifically in the analysis of ASB and physical disorder against metrics of the configuration of street networks. It uses these analyses to inform appropriate responses for minimising recurrence of ASB, design against crime and fostering community cohesion – to be brought together in a practice guide. It delivers the necessary knowledge transfer through capacity building and skills enhancement in the Boroughs in order to make these sustainable activities so that Local Authorities can continue to respond to the dynamics of ASB and physical disorder.

  Smart Solution for Spatial Planning (SSSP)

Project SSSP, carried out with AVA, UEL, aimed to create new ways of exchanging knowledge and data between planners, policy makers, urbn designers and computational designers. The team plugged in GIS data, social infrastructure planning data, urban design best practice and planning policy guidance to create urban development simulations for case study sites in east London.

  Religious Diversity, Community Cohesion and the 2001 Census

This research involved detailed analysis of the religion and ethnicity data in the 2001 Census for England to study the association between ethno-religious minorities and neighbourhoods of high deprivation, and the indicators of social captial in such communities. Project carried out with CIS, UEL.

  Thames Gateway Crime and Design Project: Crime Analysis and Modelling

The links between crime, urban design and the fabric of the built environment are complex and often very local in nature. This study was commissioned to provide a timely understanding of the broader links between crime and the social and physical environment in the Thames Gateway region.

  Agent Technology for Spatial Data Quality Analysis in Environmental Modelling

This research aims to develop a new Geo-Data Quality Analysis engine based on agent technologies. A conceptual framework has been studied for agent-based spatial data quality analysis in environmental modelling. A prototype is designed and tested with coastal oil spill modelling. This novel analysis engine has the potential to be accessed across a network. It is also a multi-agent system in which the agents can communicate and co-operate with each other. In the longer term, through such application of agents, the Geo-data Quality Analysis engine could be distributed on the Internet and applied to a range of environmental modelling and other numerical modelling of geographical nature.

  Statistical Challenge of Long Range Forecast Model for School Places

This study has been framed as a statistical challenge of the long range forecasting model used by the Newham Education Department to predict school entry and total pupil numbers and hence the planning of sufficient school provision. Through our analysis of the model and its source data, we identified ways in which the modelling might be improved. A sensitivity analysis of the model leads to an understanding of what drives uncertainty in the model and the level of risk. A spatial analysis examines patterns of geographical mobility that could impact the model. A demographic analysis identifies ways in which reliable estimates might be established for the new Thames Gateway development areas that fall within Newham.

  Common Learning Placement Mapping: Releasing the Potential for Inter-Professional Learning in the Clinical Setting

This study is set in the context of the Government's commitment to modernising education and training within the health care sector. The overarching aim of the work is to contribute towards the development a common database of placements and to inform the development of appropriate processes and partnership working for inter-professional practice placements. Specific objectives to be achieved through this project were to:

• Devise a common database and semantic model that will be capable of incorporating individual HE and placement provider databases so as to enable the NELDWC to develop future innovation and development for common learning across all professional groups.
• Undertake a mapping exercise, that is, to analyse existing data held by Higher Education and placement providers translated to the common database model, in order to clarify the geographical and temporal patterns and nature of placements for each discipline/profession used by the NELWDC.
• Gain an understanding of how other agencies use placements alongside those of the NELWDC.
• Understand the opportunities for common learning placements.
