Accommodation
Accommodation could well be one of your greatest expenses and will vary considerably depending on whether you are living in university halls, living in rented accommodation or living at home.
Remember that it is not just the rent that you need to cover. Accommodation costs also include:
- Utility bills – These can add £15-£20 a week to your living expenses and typically include gas, electricity and phone bills. In UEL Halls of Residence utilities are included. For more advice go to Accommodation.
- TV Licence – Essential if you have a TV in your room (even if you’re in Halls of Residence).
- Insurance – Not an essential, but advisable if you can afford the premiums and want to protect valuable items from theft (eg, laptop, camera).
Living in university halls
At UEL we have accommodation to suit all budgets, available at our Docklands campus. You should apply online via UELDirect; rooms are allocated only on receipt of a £250 deposit plus £500 rent in advance. You can find out more at Accommodation
Living in rented accommodation
Living in rented accommodation in London can be very expensive and your budget may need to be considerably larger. If you are looking for somewhere to rent you can contact our Off-campus Accommodation Officer on +44 (0)20 8223 4445 for a list of properties offered by private landlords and for advice on private tenancy agreements. Remember, deposits will be required and will normally be equivalent to one month’s rent, plus another months rent in advance.
Living at home
Your major costs will depend on your family’s circumstances and whether you are making a contribution to household expenses.
