Glossary of terms
- Full-time student (UG) - An undergraduate student who is studying a minimum of 100 credits per academic year
- Part-time student (UG) - An undergraduate student who is studying a maximum of 80 credits per academic year. To be eligible for a tuition fee loan part-time students must be studying at least 25% of the intensity of a full-time course (at UEL studying at least one module per semester will normally meet this standard)
- Tuition Fee - A fee that is charged to students for their university tuition costs
- Tuition Fee Loan - A loan that is taken out by a student to cover the cost of the university tuition fees
- Home student - Typically, a British citizen, or a person who has the right to live in the UK without restriction and has been living here for 3 years prior to starting the course. Eligible to apply for full SFE funding
- EU student - Typically, a person who has the right to live in the EU without restriction and is in the UK specifically to study. Eligible to apply for a Tuition Fee Loan (if full-time) or Fee Grant (if part-time)
- Migrant worker - EU student who has been living in the UK for less than the required 3 years but has been working – may be eligible for full SFE funding as ‘home’ student
- International student (overseas) - A student with no settled status in the UK and not eligible for SFE funding
- Maintenance Loan (loan for living costs) - A sum of money that a student borrows to cover their living costs and is expected to pay back with interest
- Loan - A sum of money that a student borrows and is expected to pay back with interest
- Grant - A sum of money given to support a student in their studies that does not have to be repaid
- Scholarship - An award of funding based on a student’s academic achievements and potential. It does not have to be repaid
- Bursary - A Sum of money awarded to a student to enable them to study based on financial criteria or progress. A bursary does not have to be repaid
- Means testing - A means test is a determination of whether an individual or family is eligible for help from the government depending on income and savings
- Distance/e-learning - Study that requires no attendance at the university campus. Students study from a location of their choice and liaise with tutors and peers online
- Fee assessment / Fee status - Can be either Home or Overseas and refers to the fees a student pays for their course
