Space Management
Introduction
The key aim of Space Management is to manage a dynamic but limited resource (our estate) in order to support our academic activities, minimise costs, and achieve effective utilisation in a sustainable manner.
Transformation for Excellence
In all our planning we must ensure that the use and management of space links to one or more of the nine objectives in the Transformation for Excellence University Strategy 2010-2020. We can use space to contribute to this as follows:
- A strong academic core - provide sufficient teaching space to assist staff in delivering academically strong programmes in a suitable environment conducive to good learning and teaching practice; provide functionally suitable space for research activities
- An outstanding student experience - provide a supportive student environment with a mix of teaching, informal learning and social space which will foster a culture of learning
- Sustainable student recruitment - provide an innovative learning and social environment which will make our University a place where prospective students want to be; support the student recruitment and late summer enrolment processes by providing areas appropriate to the needs of student recruitment
- Exceptional employability and enterprise - provide space for business incubation and Employability and Enterprise events
- A global reach - provide appropriate space for international partners when required and work with partners in identifying appropriate regional facilities
- Best in London for sport - work alongside the UEL Sports team in delivering appropriate space for sporting activities and continually working to identify and provide facilities for a variety of sports activities where the demand exists
- Outstanding support for business - work with partners and local authorities in providing space for local community and business engagement
- An outstanding workforce - provide a professional service and work with schools and services in providing a working environment which fosters professionalism and customer service
- A positive reputation - work with partners in a positive and consistent manner to provide a University estate which is seen as innovative and student centred.
Support from the sector
The University uses a number of tools provided by the Space Management Group (SMG) which was originally set up by HEFCE, Universities UK and others. We also undertake regular benchmarking of our performance against the sector and submit Estate Management Statistics (EMS) to HESA on an annual basis.
