Unfortunately we receive a large number of lost/mislaid USB memory sticks many of which are identical in appearance. It is not our policy to view the data contained on the stick in order to try to identify the owner. This is in the interests of both network safety and data protection/confidentiality. It is also a time consuming exercise which we are unable to support given the volume of losses.
Security will therefore only return these items where they can be clearly identified as belonging to the claimant by way of an external marking.
We advise all staff and students to be particularly careful in ensuring that they remember to recover their memory sticks from the PC they have been working on and keep them safe. We would strongly suggest that memory sticks are externally marked with a name, student number or other clear identifying feature to increase the chances of a safe return if misplaced. We recommend that students back up their work on their computers frequently and do not rely solely on the USB stick.
Security staff will not release lost memory sticks unless they can be confident that they are being returned to the original owner. All non-returned items will be retained for a period of not less than three months and then disposed of.
