It is generally accepted that all post, unless it is an urgent item, should be sent 2nd class and following the revised postal charges which are now based on size as well as weight, using the appropriate sized envelope.
Avoiding additional costs for your Department – an example
We process thousands of letters each day and costs are rising yearly. You can help to keep these within bounds by simply choosing a DL or A5 envelope 2nd class instead of an A4 envelope and opting for 2nd class rather than first class post for UK mailings. Currently, the difference in cost is (24p vs 46p) = 22p. That’s £220 per thousand letters that could be saved from the University’s budget.
With the new rates coming into force in April this year, the difference is even more startling ; 25p vs 50p – that’s exactly twice as expensive. So please give some thought to planning your mailings and the envelope size you need.
