Prior to the London 2012 Games, security fences and gates were installed around the perimeter of the University of East London’s Docklands Campus. These measures were taken to enhance the security of the site whilst high-profile clients, such as Team USA and China Central Television, were residing on campus during the Olympics and Paralympics.
Now that the Games have finished and UEL’s new academic year has begun, the University has decided to retain the perimeter fences and gates to provide UEL students with a safe and secure learning and living environment. UEL has already received a number of positive responses from student residents praising the new security measures.
There are two lockable gates which control pedestrian access to Docklands Campus: the first is located adjacent to UEL’s Reception Building and faces Cyprus DLR station; the second is placed between the Halls of Residence and the dockside, next to the Sir Steve Redgrave Bridge. There is a further pedestrian and main vehicle entrance on University Way. These gates are hereafter referred to as Reception Gate, Dockside Gate and University Way entrance.
The gates will be open at regular times throughout the week:
The campus is open 24/7 to students and staff on production of a valid UEL ID card.
When the gates are closed you will be able to access the campus via staffed points at the Reception Building and the University Way entrance.
You will be required to show your UEL ID card each time you wish to enter the campus. Additionally you are required to have your card on visible display at all times whilst on campus. The Security team will undertake random checking of UEL ID Cards using security scanners.
If you forget your UEL ID Card please report to the Reception Building and you will be issued with an unescorted visitor’s pass that will be pre-programmed to provide the same access levels as your normal UEL ID Card. We ask that you return this card when you exit the campus.
The vast majority of people will not need to go through the Reception Building to gain access to the campus as they simply need to present their UEL ID card to the security officer on the Reception Gate. Consequently, the only people needing to go through the Reception Building will be visitors to the campus, individuals who have forgotten their UEL ID Card or those who are asking for information.
We ask staff to complete the visitor’s form available on the Facilities Services web pages and return it to the Customer Services team at Reception when they are expecting a visitor. You can download a copy of the form at www.uel.ac.uk/facilities/customerservices/visitors.htm
The Customer Services team will contact you to let you know when your visitor has arrived and either direct them to your meeting point or ask them to wait in Reception for you to collect them. They will be given a visitor’s pass when they arrive at either the vehicle entrance on University Way or the Reception Building.
Casual visitors cannot enter the campus on their own as they will not have a visitor’s ID pass. However, some contractors may be issued with an unescorted visitors pass to allow them free access. Please contact Security for more guidance on 020 8223 5599.
Registered visitors will be able to collect their parking permit from the vehicle entrance on University Way.
Further guidance on registering visitors: www.uel.ac.uk/facilities/customerservices/visitors.htm
If an unexpected staff visitor arrives at the vehicle entrance on University Way, Security will contact the staff member they are coming to visit to confirm that they are a legitimate visitor. Visitors will be directed to the Visitors’ car park adjacent to the East Building and then will need to collect their parking permit and visitor’s pass from Reception.
Please note that there are a limited number of visitor’s car parking spaces at Docklands Campus and staff should make every effort to book a parking space in advance for their visitors.
Study bedrooms are for occupation by one student only. After 6pm, all visitors must be signed in at Security Reception, located on the ground floor, East Building.
Visitors can stay overnight (i.e. from 11pm onwards) for a maximum of two nights in any seven-day period. Students will need to fill out a visitor request form, prior to the proposed stay, which will need to be signed by all flatmates and Residential Services (who are based in Longbridge House).
Visitor request forms are available at: www.uel.ac.uk/residential/current-students/documents/VisitorRequestForm.pdf
Students should take their visitor and the completed form to Security Reception, where their guest will be issued with a temporary ID card, which must be worn at all times on campus. Guests must be signed in before 11pm and only registered guests are permitted to stay in residences.
Students accept total responsibility for the behaviour, actions and safety of their guest(s) and students must always be present when guests are on campus. If a visitors’ behaviour is deemed to be unreasonable, they may be asked to leave at any time by either Security or Residential Services
Further information is available in the Residential Students Handbook www.uel.ac.uk/residential/
