The IERU promotes invertebrate conservation through research, consultancy projects and publicity with a particular focus on the east Thames corridor.
Collaboration with Natural England and Barking Riverside. Investigation of the potential to include habitat features of interest associated with brownfield sites into landscape design as part of the design of sustainable communities.
Collaboration with Barking Riverside, Livingroofs.org and the Sutainability Research Institute investigating best practice for greenroof design to maximise biodiversity, water storage and insulation.
Investigation of the habitat and habitat management requirements of the UK Biodiversity Action Plan species the shrill carder bee (Bombus sylvarum) and the brown-banded carder bee (Bombus humilis) in south Essex. Study methods include surveys, pollen analysis, molecular studies and GIS mapping. The IERU is currently supporting a ten-year bumblebee habitat improvement programme at Hadleigh Castle Country Park, South Benfleet, Essex.
• Living roofs
Collaboration with Buglife installing and monitoring living roofs as part of an East London-wide scheme to provide habitat for invertebrates..
In partnership with the Environment Agency and Natural England. Investigating invertebrate assemblages on Thames Estuary coastal grazing marsh to assess assemblages, diversity, rarity, typicalness and habitat features supporting the populations.
The IERU has facilities for invertebrate surveying, molecular studies of population genetics and GIS habitat mapping software.
The IERU has worked, or is working, in partnership with:
Essex County Council
Cleanaway Canvey and Pitsea Marshes Trust
