A Knowledge Exchange Partnership has been established between the University of East London Sustainability Research Institute (SRI) and Environmental Research Group (ERG), Barking Riverside, Livingroofs.org and the Institute for Sustainability investigating best practice for green roof design to maximise biodiversity, water storage and insulation.
With the support of a variety of project partners we have been able to create a green roof test facility at Barking Riverside, East London. The facility is being used to test the effects of manipulating green roof design elements on the ecological function of the roof system. For more information on the phase 1 research programme, download the background information booklet on the right of this page.
We would like to thank Barking Riverside, Livingroofs.org, the Institute for Sutainability, the Environment Agency, ABG Ltd, Bauder, London Borough of Barking and Dagenham, London Thames Gateway Development Corporation, Eco-Green Roofing Ltd, Acclaim Contracts, Polypipe and British Wild Flower Plants for their help and support that has taken the theory behind this research project and turned it into a reality.
On October 22nd 2010, UEL, Livingroofs and Barking Riverside officially launched the Green Roof Experimental Research Facility at Barking Riverside Offices. Project partners along with representatives from local authorities, statutory agencies, local SME's and charities attended the event at the research facility. Speakers at the event included Jenny Jones (Green Party and GLA Housing and Planning Committee), Clive Wilding (Barking Riverside), Dusty Gedge (Livingroofs.org) and Dr Stuart Connop (ERG).
