The University of East London is home to one of the most diverse student and staff bodies in the country, with some 60% of our students and over 20% of our staff coming from ethnic minority backgrounds.
Our Charter for Inclusivity states:
"We are committed to working together to build a learning community founded on equality of opportunity - a learning community which celebrates the rich diversity of our student and staff populations. Discriminatory behaviour has no place in our community and will not be tolerated.
Within a spirit of respecting difference, our equality and diversity policies promise equal treatment and opportunity for all regardless of gender, sexuality, race, colour, disability, religion, age, and ethnic or national origin. We call on all members of our community to make a personal commitment to these aims."
In pursuit of these aims, The Mentor and Equalities Unit was established in 2002. Staff within the Unit work on a range of initiatives including events promoting equality and diversity, staff development, local action plans, data monitoring, and policy review.
In September 2006, The Mentor and Equalities Unit merged with The National Mentoring Consortium to form the Mentor and Equalities Unit. We hope to draw on the vast experience in providing mentoring support from the NMC to provide a programme of development for BME (Black and Minority Ethnic) staff. We will also have a greater focus on student Equality and Diversity issues. We will aim to ensure that students have a positive experience at UEL and achieve their educational goals.
A magazine called 'IN FOCUS', which is published bi-monthly carries articles about the Unit, it is readily available around the campuses.
