Physiotherapy staff and students 'aid' the London Games

Shan Howes, senior lecturer in Physiotherapy within the School of Health Sports & Biosciences, and her students have volunteered their time as first aiders for the London 2012 Games.

Working stints of up 15 hours, the students and Shan have already supported paramedics during the rehearsals for the opening ceremony, as well as the ceremony itself, and have treated many musculoskeletal problems plus a variety of other complaints such as asthma and panic attacks.

Shan commented: “The students have done a great job and represented UEL really well. The paramedics have all been very complimentary about them and everyone's had a lot of fun.

"We're continuing to cover rehearsals for the closing ceremony, and are all looking forward to Sunday. That won't be the end of it though as we'll then be starting work on the Paralympics!” Read more
