CEWE became my 'business family' as they wish for me the best, help me when I could fall and show me the right way. Treat me as a business professional even in my humbled beginnings, the approachability of all established experts makes me go further as I know they go with me. In addition CEWE helped me to get very credible business contacts that I cooperate with today, through attending events and conferences I have been inspired by many ideas and testimonials by successful business women sharing their stories.
Mentorship was also key as my mentor is great and we really understand each other, all the specific hints and advice given are a great contribution to my current plan and to my success."
Only after getting my first job did I fully realise the impact of employment and business support UEL provides to students and graduates. When I came to UEL my only aspiration was getting internationally recognised degree in Media Studies. Several internships at Knowledge Dock Business Centre later, I was hired by the number one public relations agency in Prague. A year later, I resigned on corporate career to pursue my business ambitions in London. As a recent UEL graduate I gained access to Petchey Centre for Entrepreneurship and other Knowledge Dock facilities, I received extensive career advice and start up support from Enterprise and Employability Team including acceptance to The Challenge training programme for entrepreneurs and opportunity to win a start up business package in E-Factor competition. I further benefit from networking opportunities, knowledge and collaboration within Centre of Excellence for Women’s Entrepreneurship and other exciting opportunities UEL has to offer.
The University has established excellent links with the Haberdashers Livery Company. In the past they have generously donated grants to improve the entrepreneurial ambitions of the students at UEL.
The £1500 Haberdashers money went towards web development for our website www.access4wheelchairs.com.Without this award it would not have been possible to start my business so I am very happy to have gotten the opportunity.
Owen won the E factor in 2010, with his business idea to create a one-stop-shop for micro-generation technology; they wanted businesses and home owners to be able to come to them for renewable energy advice. He claims the overall experience of the competition, going through the different processes including pitching his idea, studying all elements of the business and answering intense questioning from the judges, was very positive. During the competition participants can attend work shops and other guidance meetings which were crucial to the businesses being ready for the final. Owen admits “even if I hadn’t won the competition, it would have given the company a boost. Because we did win we have been able to move faster then we anticipated we have completed 2 installations in 3 months, when we predicted only 1 in 6 months. The support we have received from winning has been amazing”. The competition has allowed the young entrepreneur to move forward with his company and he admits it has given them a lot more confidence in the business. Without the E-Factor Owen believes he would have been a month or so behind with the business.
