What is the Student Associates Scheme?

The Student Associates Scheme is a national project funded by the Training and Development Agency for Schools (TDA).
The Student Associates Scheme is set up with two aims:
- to help raise the aspirations of young people in schools/colleges towards further/higher education
- to encourage current university students to consider teaching as a career
What are the Benefits?
This is an opportunity for you to:
- Help young people develop and perhaps encourage them into higher education
- Find out more about teaching as a career and to start building up the experience you will need if you decide to apply for a teacher training course
- Boost your CV, whether you go into teaching or not
- Gain valuable work experience
- Get paid £40 per day spent in school
Who Can Take Part?
You can, if you are:
- Currently studying at university
-
Considering teaching as a career
- Studying Maths, Science, a Modern Foreign Language, ICT, Design &Technology or Religious Education, but other degrees may be acceptable
- Enthusiastic about your degree subject
- Keen to inspire school students
Whats Involved?
You are required to:
- Show your commitment to the Student Associates Scheme by attending a training session, completing a 15-day placement and attending an evaluation day.
- Work alongside teachers/tutors in the classroom on individual and group work in your subject area. Also, develop a project related to your degree subject that will benefit the students.
- Complete the 15 day placement within the academic year – dates will be negotiated between you and your school
- Carry out tasks for a portfolio. This might include observation of teachers’ behaviour management techniques; mentoring a student; profiling students with SEN and EAL; and perhaps undertaking some teaching.
- Work with individuals or small groups of students in the classroom
- Help students who need support with study skills
- Work with students with Special Educational Needs (SEN) or English as an Additional Language (EAL)
- Assist students with revision techniques
- Help students to plan essays and exam answers
- Work with groups of students on extension exercises
- Prepare demonstrations (science)
- Work with students who lack motivation
Interested?
To be considered for the Student Associates Scheme you should complete an application form in line with the criteria.
Should your application be successful you are required to attend the training and evaluation sessions.
