Postgraduate Certificate of Education in Post-Compulsory Education and Training (PGCE/PCET)

The PGCE/PCET focuses on the generic skills required for teaching and learning, rather than on an individual subject. There is a particularly strong emphasis on active learning and on your own participation and contributions.

If you want to teach older learners, our Standards Verification UK (SVUK ) - endorsed PGCE/PCET programme is ideal. You will gain a qualification enabling you to teach students aged 16-19 and adults in Further Education, Sixth Form and tertiary colleges, and also in adult and community education settings.

You will teach a range of programmes in your subject or vocational area. Applications are particularly welcome from people with qualifications and experience to teach:

Art and Design, Business Studies, Computing and Information Technology, Construction, Engineering, Health and Social Care, Hotel and Catering, Humanities and Social Science, Key Skills, Leisure and Tourism, Mathematics, Performing Arts, Science and Supportive Education.

NB If you are currently a university student and would like to get some school experience to help you decide if teaching is the career for you, why not take a look a the Student Associates Scheme?

Programme structure

The programme is full-time and lasts for three terms over 36 weeks. In Term 1 you will spend two days a week at UEL, and one day a week in Terms 2 and 3. In addition, you will attend a placement in a local college for two days a week in Term 1, three days a week in Term 2, and two-three days a week in Term 3. In total you will spend 120 hours teaching over the course of the whole programme (some teaching may be in the evening).

Placements are arranged in one of our many partner colleges, most of which are in East London or Essex. While at the college, you will also be supported by a mentor, an experienced teacher in your subject or vocational area. Many of our trainees are subsequently offered full or part-time posts in their placement colleges.

Financial benefits

A £6,000 training bursary is available to applicants who satisfy residency requirements. The bursary is paid in nine monthly instalments starting at the end of October.

In addition, your fees will be paid by your Local Authority.
