Graduate Teacher Programme

Overview

The Graduate Teacher Programme (GTP) offers you a way to qualify as a teacher while you work. It is a one year programme of postgraduate training. The programme suits people who want to change to a teaching career but need to continue earning while they train. UEL works predominantly with schools in the east London area but the partnership extends into other London boroughs and out to the Home Counties of Essex, Thurrock and Kent.

Training at UEL

The GTP programme normally lasts for one year. If you already have teaching experience, it may be possible to take less time. During the programme you will receive the training you need to meet the standards for Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).

You will work in a school on a timetable which builds throughout the programme. This will allow you to undertake training activities in school and at UEL. For example, this will include guidance on classroom techniques; how to plan lessons; observing experienced teachers; writing assignments and developing ICT skills.

You must have experience in at least two schools to be recommended to the General Teaching Council for QTS, so your training plan will usually include a placement of 4 weeks in a second school and visits to a primary school and a sixth form college.

Assessment

You will be continuously assessed throughout the programme against the QTS Standards. At the end of the programme you will be assessed in your classroom teaching and you will submit a Portfolio of Evidence which will include written tasks and assignments, lesson plans and evaluations, examples of pupils' work and other documentation.

Subject Tutor

Trainees on the GTP are tutored by subject specialist tutors from the Secondary team. In addition to UEL based sessions, your tutor will visit you in school in order to see you teach, give constructive advice and debrief you. As this is a school based programme, your colleagues in school are a very important part of your training. You will be allocated a subject mentor who will work with you on a day to day basis. The school based training programme will be supervised by your professional tutor who is usually a senior manager in the school.

Facilities and resources

GTP trainees have access to all UEL facilities, resources and Student Support Services. Additional training such as Subject Booster Courses, the Communication Course and ICT support are also available for GTP trainees.

Entry requirements for the programme

We would usually expect you to have a degree in the subject you wish to teach. We need to make sure that you have a sufficiently sound base of subject knowledge to start the programme. If you are unsure about the relevance of your degree to the subject you want to teach, then please contact us.

The Recruitment and Selection Process

The majority of applications to UEL including all those in the non-priority secondary category come with the support of a lead school. Supported applications are regarded as joint applications, with consideration of applicants and schools taking place at recruitment and selection. Formal offers of GTP training places will be made by UEL and not by schools. It is the responsibility of schools to make arrangements for the employment of graduate teachers.

A small number of priority secondary places are filled by those making an initial application without the support of school. If you cannot find a vacancy in a school, you may register with us and we will circulate your details, on a regular basis, to our partnership schools. Applications are only followed up if there is a vacancy for a teacher in the school. As GTP training places are limited you may wish to consider our PGCE programme if places for GTP have been filled.

Funding

The GTP is funded by the Training and Development Agency for Schools (TDA). UEL pays the training school a salary grant as a contribution towards your salary. Trainees must be paid according to the Teachers’ Pay and Conditions Document on either the qualified or unqualified pay scales with the appropriate London weighting.

The amount of the salary grant varies according to the location of the school. For 2009-10 the GTP salary grant is:  £18 200 - inner London; £17 150 - outer London; fringe areas £15 400; £14 500 – all other areas.

National........................... £ 14,500
Outer London..................£ 17,150
Inner London...................£ 18,200
Fringe areas....................£ 15,400

Self funding

UEL provides self-funded places to independent schools where the national curriculum is taught and state schools who are unable to access funded places. Salary grants and training grants are not available for these places. The cost of training has to be met by the school. This is approximately £4000 per trainee and covers both provider costs and school training costs. The TDA will, however, pay for the cost of final assessment.

Making an application

Please register with us and we will send you the relevant application form.

Registration for Graduate Teacher Programme Application Form

We will accept applications while places remain. When the number of applications for any subject exceeds the number of interview places available, we will close for applications in that subject. We will advertise closing dates on this website. We advise that applications are submitted as early as possible as there is great demand for places.
