Examples of activities carried out by teachers involved in the Action Research Dual Language Book Project

Producing audio and written materials to welcome newcomers to the school in their own language
Using dual language books and associated CDs, games and posters to introduce all children in a class/school to languages spoken in the community and to develop an interest in languages and metalinguistic awareness
Using dual language books to support the learning of new arrivals
Running workshops with parents to make dual language books based on their children’s personal experiences
Providing dual language books to parents to read with their children as appropriate, both to support the learning of English and of the home language
Involving parents, colleagues and visitors in telling stories to groups and classes of children and making recordings for the school to use alongside dual language books
Making Story Sacks to accompany dual language books that include materials in children’s home language

Using the multilingual activities and games (such as those available on Language of the Month (www.newburypark.redbridge.sch.uk and in the Multilingual Month booklets (http://www.multiverse.ac.uk/ViewArticle2.aspx?ContentId=13237 )
