With Sarah Bonnell becoming a Language College, we chose to offer French to two local primary schools to start with. Mr Baah-Mensah and I started to teach at St James and Maryland primary schools in January 2004. Over the years, other members of Sarah Bonnell staff joined the team as we took on more primary partners. We teach years 5 and 6 one 45-minute lesson each week.
The resources which we use are mainly self-produced. They are on Sarah Bonnell and our partner schools’ shared area. These resources include the following:-
* Nos contes et poésies bilingues collection of bilingual stories and poems.
These are twenty six stories and poems written in English with their French translations for reading age groups 8 to 13. The stories and poems were written by one of the classes which we offered French to on a pilot scheme. They did their written pieces as homework when in year 5 at St James primary school. Those children started secondary school during the 2005/6 academic year. Six of them are currently in the Fast Track French (FTF) at Sarah Bonnell School and they are Akran Adan, Jesmin Begun, Kathleen (Katie) Daly, Nawal Balkees, Nimo Kulane and Rumana Islam. The others are in various other schools in the borough of London: Brampton Manor, Cumberland, Eastlea Community, Forest Gate Community, St Bonaventure's Catholic Comprehensive,Tom Hood School and WansteadHigh School.
I worked with Miranda Broadhurst, former Operations Manager with The Chalkface Project Ltd, to put these stories and poems on a secure website for the reading enjoyment of school children around the world. Everyone indeed may enjoy them, including parents and teachers by contacting me.
The FTF group is made up of students who have done some French at primary school and are now being prepared to sit for their GCSE in year 9. They recently did their Secondary ASSET Preliminary exams in all four language skills (Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing) with a few doing the Breakthrough exams option. We hope that soon, some of the children in our partner schools will sit for Primary ASSET tests in the skill(s) which they feel ready for.
There is an open line of communication with our partner schools by e-mail and through discussions in the classroom. I also send regular memos to Co-ordinators and class teachers.
From September 2007, support for our four primary partner schools (Carpenters, Colegrave, St James and West Ham) will take the form of:-
In conclusion, we feel privileged that we, at Sarah Bonnell School, continue to make some impact and to contribute to the teaching and learning of foreign languages at KS2 within the borough.
