How we support you

Distance learning students need ongoing, consistent and reliable support in terms of learning resources, academic support and pastoral support. At UEL we support you in a range of ways:

Student Advisors

Each distance learning student benefits from a team of dedicated Student Advisors. The Distance Learning Student Advisors will be the first point of contact for all non-academic support matters.

Our Distance Learning Student Advisors will:

  • work with you to agree a study programme, discuss your progress and remind you about deadlines
  • explain university procedures and policies
  • help you plan for assessments and exams
  • help you determine which university Award suits your career or personal needs
  • refer you to the best learning and support resources including dyslexia and disability support and career advice.

Academic support

All distance learning students receive academic support from appropriately qualified academics. In many cases, the academics who support distance learning students also teach on the campus-based versions of the programmes. Moreover, UEL academics receive specialist training to support you in our online environment UEL Plus.

Academics will communicate with you via a series of virtual communication tools. This means that you may interact with your tutor via email, via a notice board, a chat room or online messaging.

In addition, some postgraduate programmes use Section Specialists.  Section Specialists contribute their expertise to various parts of the programme and students can benefit from their knowledge and industry expertise.

Meeting other students

Peer support is also very important and you will find a broad range of opportunities to build networks and exchange ideas with other students via our online community.

Some students join a cohort of learners and work with learning materials that require a high level of interaction and online discussion. Many of these students enjoy the comradeship which emerges over the duration of the module.

Students with additional study needs

We welcome applications from prospective students with specific learning difficulties or disabilities. If you have a specific learning difficulty (such as dyslexia, for example) or a disability, please contact us to discuss the availability of support provision during your studies. You can have a confidential discussion with one of our Student Advisors.

All applications will be considered on the basis of the specific entry criteria only. While you do not have to disclose a disability, it would helpful if you complete the relevant section of the application form, so we can offer appropriate support and advice.
