Case study:

What are you doing now?

Progressed to employment
Job title: Research Assistant
Employer: UEL

Did the internship influence your choice of employment/career path?

Yes, it has. After the internship I gained more jobs in research.   my longer term goals is to work in a consultancy role.

What was most exciting /enjoyable about the internship experience?

Opportunity to use my initiative, give input. Presenting at conferences. Working with an amazing team. Being encouraged by my supervisor. Been offered opportunities to learn and shine every day.

What challenges, if any, did you face during the internship and how did you overcome them?

I felt the recording for the qualitative data wasn't clear enough... so I had to devote extra time at home to manage to deliver my work on time. Also during the poster preparation, my supervisor was abroad, so I was a bit unsure, but it went well in the end.

What key skills or knowledge did you gain from the internship?

Confidence, insight in professional research. Learned new software package NVivo. Free training ('working with people from different ethnic backgrounds'). Presentation Skills. Data analysis. Networking.

What would you say to undergraduates who are thinking about applying for an internship?

I would say don't be shy just go for it. I didn't want to apply at first. I thought my English wasn't good enough. I have found an extremely supportive supervisor and a great team. It went perfectly well. It has been one of my best experiences ever, short but very intense and highly formative. I was very blessed to have a supervisor that saw good in me and helped me to develop my confidence and new skills. But be careful, I have done different internships and not all the supervisors are willing, trustful or have the opportunity to offer you this. So the advise I give you is to really understand and maybe negotiate your input to the team before accepting the job offer.
