Case study:

What are you doing now?

Progressed to post-graduate study:
Kings College London, Institute of Psychiatry
MSc Clinical Forensic Psychology

Did the internship influence your decision to undertake this course?

Through the internship and the support from my Supervisor, I gained confidence in relation to my statistical abilities which I felt would help me progress onto post-graduate level.

What was most exciting /enjoyable about the internship experience?

I was able to meet and interview over 200 children aged 5-10 years from varied backgrounds.  They were a real pleasure to work with and made my internship really enjoyable.

What challenges, if any, did you face during the internship and how did you overcome them?

One of the biggest challenges was working with such a large sample.  It involved careful planning in relation to organising my interviews to fit in with the children’s school routine, whilst trying to ensure that I gave each child sufficient time in which to complete the questionnaire which I administered.  The easiest way I managed to overcome any difficulties was by developing a good rapport with the school teachers and staff and trying to be as flexible as I could in order to fit into their routine.

What would you say to undergraduates who are thinking about applying for an internship?

The UEL internship undergraduate scheme is an opportunity not to miss!  The experience that I have gained from my internship has resulted in a number of roles within the field of psychology.  This internship was a platform that has served me well in relation to securing my experience thus far.  Furthermore, the internships are supervised by highly experienced staff members, therefore, if you are interested in a particular project - what better way to gain one-to-one experience and get paid for it!
