The BA Special Education degree prepares you to work with children with SEN across all age ranges and in a variety of settings. It provides the opportunity to explore the context in which children are defined, diagnosed and labelled as having special educational needs. You will also consider the challenging concepts of equal opportunity, inclusion, children's rights, working in partnership and a holistic understanding of childhood. The degree includes areas of particular interest such as behaviour management, dyslexia, working within the multi disciplinary team, the role of the Special Educational Needs Coordinator (SENCO) and international perspectives.
This exciting degree programme offers a holistic understanding of childhood, education and society. Practical application of inclusion is analysed in the light of theoretical understanding and legislation. This programme will enable you to develop a reflective approach to inclusion, together with critical thinking skills that are transferable and highly valued in the workplace.
You will study core modules which provide an introduction to special educational needs, challenging disability and inclusion. You will also study modules on academic writing, study skills, employability and research.
There is a range of option modules which enable you to choose areas in which you have particular interest such as; behaviour management, dyslexia, working within a multi-disciplinary team, international perspectives, sociology, child health and policy.
There are work-based modules at every level of the degree, which allow you to gain credits using evidence of your practice from your work placement.
You can view a full guide to the modules you have to study as part of your chosen pathway, along with a full range of option modules available by viewing the Single & Combined Honours Programmes Guide for Special Education.
All our Combined Honours Programmes can be studied on a Part-time or Full-time basis. As a Part-time student, you will study the same degree programme, but at a slower pace. You will study up to 4 modules per year (instead of 6 as a full-time student). Some Education modules are available to study in the evening.
