Sociology provides a critical appreciation of the most important forces shaping our experience in the contemporary world: globalisation, multiculturalism, social divisions and social exclusion, class, race, gender and sexuality.
Sociology and Anthropology Research at UEL received a 4 rating in the 2001 Research Assessment Exercise, which placed it in the top league of new university departments. We take pride in presenting high quality courses and in our teaching and learning methods. We received maximum marks for these two important areas when the Higher Education Funding Council for England and Wales assessed us (scores shared with only seven other institutions across the whole university sector).
The Sociology programme introduces a wide-range of materials; debates and approaches designed to encourage active participation in the learning process - including presentations, class discussions, course work and case studies drawn from everyday life. Active learning means generating your own data on field trips, knocking up web sites, and seeing the world through new eyes. We offer a variety of exciting, innovative and topical ways of exploring the world in which we live.
The first year provides an introduction to the rich and varied world of contemporary Sociology. The programme is designed to introduce Sociology to those that have not encountered it before and to expand the range of those that have.
