Pharmacology is the study of drugs; their biological effects on physiological systems and application to the prevention and treatment of disease. Pharmacology is at the interface of biochemistry, human physiology, molecular biology and toxicology, all of which are studied in this degree. The aim of the programme is to introduce you to all aspects of the subject including biochemical and molecular pharmacology, cardiovascular pharmacology, immunopharmacology, psychopharmacology, drug discovery processes and toxicology.
We offer a full programme of laboratory practicals, including an individual research project and the option of taking a credit rated 48 week sandwich placement.
Level 1 is designed to bring students from a diversity of backgrounds to a common understanding of a number of generic and specific skills required for progress to Level 2 of any of the Bioscience degrees at UEL. These include HE study and ICT skills, biology, chemistry, cell biology, genetics, human physiology, microbiology, statistics and experimental design. At Level 2 you will study modules in advanced human physiology, pharmacology, and biochemistry and molecular biology. At Level 3, areas of pharmacology introduced at Level 2 are studied in depth, together with toxicology and a laboratory or non-laboratory based research project.
You can view a full guide to the modules you have to study as part of your chosen pathway, along with a full range of option modules available by viewing the Single & Combined Honours Programmes Guide for Pharmacology.
All our Combined Honours Programmes can be studied on a Part-time or Full-time basis. As a Part-time student, you will study the same degree programme, but at a slower pace. You will study up to 4 modules per year (instead of 6 as a full-time student).
This degree will enable you to pursue a career in pharmacological research and development with global pharmaceutical companies and small-medium biotechnological enterprises, government funded research institutes and laboratories. Non-laboratory based careers include working as a CRA (clinical research associate), in medical sales and pharmacovigillance with the Government's MHRA (medicines & health care products regulatory agency) or private industry.
Popular combinations include:
We have over 5000 different combinations and you can choose from over 75 pathways. Please visit this page www.uel.ac.uk/combined/programmes for a full list.
240 UCAS tariff points (including two passes at A2 level, with a minimum of grade B in A2 Biology, Chemistry or Physics). In addition to the above, we require GCSE Maths, English and Science grade C.
If you wish to study with us full-time from September, you will need to make your application via UCAS (www.ucas.ac.uk).
If you wish to study with us part-time you can obtain an application form from our admissions department study@uel.ac.uk or apply on-line.
