Programme Specification for Journalism Studies (Major, Joint or Minor)

Campus: Docklands

Why Study Journalism Studies as part of a Combined Honours Degree?

Without journalism, how would we know what's happening in the world outside our own personal experience? But do journalists tell it like it is? And if not, why not? These are some of the questions which you can address by studying journalism.

The Journalism programme at UEL interrogates journalism itself. We look at the history of journalism in order to question its current operation. We follow a sociological approach in order to investigate factors such as class, 'race', gender and sexuality in the workings of the news room. As political economists, we track the development of news as a commodity; and we monitor the impact of new communications technologies on journalism, as well as the influence of news producers on the development of new communications technologies.

The motto of a good journalist is 'question everything'; similarly, academic study of Journalism means questioning everything about journalism, and using every academic means at our disposal to understand journalism in all its various aspects, and to conceptualise its role in a changing society.

What will I study?

Journalism at UEL is not a training programme. It takes a scholarly approach to present-day journalism and its pre-cursors in print and in other media. But it also equips students to begin to operate as media professionals, and to take part in current debates pertaining to the professions which they may enter. Journalism students are encouraged to make use of an extensive range of contact with professional journalists and other media practitioners. The philosophy underlying the programme may be summed up as 'critical vocationalism'.

Which modules will I study?

You can view a full guide to the modules you have to study as part of your chosen pathway, along with a full range of option modules available by viewing the Single & Combined Honours Programmes Guide for Journalism Studies

Can I study a Combined Honours Programme as a Part-time degree?

All our Combined Honours Programmes can be studied on a Part-time or Full-time basis. As a Part-time student, you will study the same degree programme, but at a slower pace. You will study up to 4 modules per year (instead of 6 as a full-time student).

What career opportunities are open to me if I study Journalism Studies ?

A degree which includes Journalism will give you the opportunity to develop a range of critical, analytical and research and organisational skills that you can offer to range of diverse potential employers.
