Programme Specification for Dance Urban Practice (Major only)

Campus: Docklands

Why study Dance: urban practice as part of a combined honours degree?

The BA Dance: Urban Practice degree offers a unique role to develop individual dance practice through the development of a range of technical & choreographic skills and a critical examination of dance practice within a contemporary setting.

Building on the diversity of East London, the programme offers an approach to creativity, technical development, historical knowledge and performance in urban dance.

Dance students will get the opportunity to study urban dance styles including street dance, break, popping and locking as well experiencing more contemporary techniques. Throughout the degree there are a number of opportunities to focus on choreography in a range of contexts including theatre, site specific dance and dance & media. Students will also have the opportunity to develop and deliver dance projects/workshops for communities.

The course involves lecturers from both UEL and Newham Sixth Form College. Students will also get the opportunity to work with professional dancers, choreographers and dance practitioners. Part of the teaching for the programme takes place at Stratford Circus, a purpose-built, working performance venue where the university is a partner.

What will I study?

Modules for the Dance: Urban Practice programme are balanced between practical and theoretical studies. Modules are delivered through studio and workshop environments with plenty of opportunities to develop technical and chorographical skills. The programme will also give students opportunities to work on dance projects with dance. Key partners include East London Dance and Robert Hylton Urban Classicism
