Programme Specification for Criminology (Major, Joint or Minor)

Campus: Duncan House, Stratford

Why Study Criminology as part of a Combined Honours Degree?

If you have an interest in the problem of crime, in questions of justice, social exclusion or human rights then this subject area is for you.

Criminology at UEL seeks to examine the crime problem from a number of different disciplinary perspectives. For example, legal responses to crime are studied and placed within their political and cultural context; sociological and psychological explanations for offending are also examined and criticised.

As Criminology is interdisciplinary it is well suited to being studied as part of a Combined Honours Programme. In particular, if you wish to combine with Law, Psychology or Sociology you will be able to complement your studies and broaden your expertise without limiting yourself to one specialism or taking on a completely different subject.

What will I study?

The number of Criminology modules you will study is entirely up to you as this programme is offered as a major, joint or minor component of a Combined Honours degree. All combined students will be introduced to the Criminal Justice Process and questions of crime causation in Theoretical Criminology. Students who take Criminology as a Major component have a wider choice of options within the programme, including Crime & the Media, Police Studies, Prison Studies and White Collar Crime.

Which modules will I study?

You can view a full guide to the modules you have to study as part of your chosen pathway, along with a full range of option modules available by viewing the Single & Combined Honours Programmes Guide for Criminology

Can I study a Combined Honours Programme as a Part-time degree?

All our Combined Honours Programmes can be studied on a Part-time or Full-time basis. As a Part-time student, you will study the same degree programme, but at a slower pace. You will study up to 4 modules per year (instead of 6 as a full-time student). Some Criminology modules are offered in the evening.

What career opportunities are open to me if I study Criminology?

A background in Criminology would enhance your career opportunities if you wished to pursue a career in:

  • the Police Force
  • Probation Service
  • Prison Service
  • Social Work
  • the Private Security Industry
  • Community and Voluntary Organisations
  • Local and National Government
