Programme Specification for Computing (Major, Joint or Minor)

Campus: Docklands

Why Study Computing as part of a Combined Honours Degree?

Computer systems and software are an integral part of the world in which we live. Few areas of our working or personal lives remain untouched by these technologies. Well-engineered, reliable and usable systems are crucial to the survival of virtually all organisations, to the functioning of the global economy and even for our entertainment. People who can build and maintain these systems will be in continual demand in the future. This field of study is both challenging and rewarding. It introduces you to modern technologies and equips you with essential problem solving, communications and business skills.

What will I study?

If you are interested in how computers can be used to solve business problems, finding out more about what happens behind the computer screen, developing and using technical skills and using the internet to develop solutions for organisations, then this programme is for you.

Which modules will I study?

You can view a full guide to the modules you have to study as part of your chosen pathway, along with a full range of option modules available by viewing the Single & Combined Honours Programmes Guide for Computing

Can I study a Combined Honours Programme as a Part-time degree?

All our Combined Honours Programmes can be studied on a Part-time or Full-time basis. As a Part-time student, you will study the same degree programme, but at a slower pace. You will study up to 4 modules per year (instead of 6 as a full-time student).

What career opportunities are open to me if I study Computing ?

There is still a significant shortage of up-to-date computing skills in the UK. Organisations need to have access to these skills to make best use of computing and internet resources.

Will I be eligible for any Professional Exemptions?

Major pathways in Computing give partial exemption from the British Computer Society examinations.

Work Placement Opportunities

Opportunities exist for students following some of the Major Computing programmes to spend a placement year working with an organisation. This allows you to gain valuable experience in an area in which you may decide to develop your career, whilst establishing useful contacts.
