Programme Specification for Biochemistry (Major, Minor or Joint)

Campus: Stratford

Why Study Biochemistry as part of a Combined Honours Degree?

Biochemistry is one of the fastest growing areas of human scientific knowledge. It is the study of biology at the molecular level and it has grown in importance as techniques for its study have become more sophisticated. It now encompasses applications in genetic engineering and molecular bioengineering as well as in physiological and medical areas. Anyone who wishes to have a thorough understanding of any branch of biology must now have an understanding of biochemistry. Not surprisingly biochemists can be found working in many specialist areas of biology.

What will I study?

It has now become impossible to cover all aspects of biochemistry but the course aims to provide students with a broad overview of the subject. This is particularly so in the first two years of the course while in the final year specialist areas are studied in greater depth. These include molecular biology and genetic engineering, protein structure and assembly and cellular signalling mechanisms together with medical aspects of biochemistry.

Which modules will I study?

You can view a full guide to the modules you have to study as part of your chosen pathway, along with a full range of option modules available by viewing the Single & Combined Honours Programmes Guide for Biochemistry.

Can I study a Combined Honours Programme as a Part-time degree?

All our Combined Honours Programmes can be studied on a Part-time or Full-time basis. As a Part-time student, you will study the same degree programme, but at a slower pace. You will study up to 4 modules per year (instead of 6 as a full-time student).

Popular Combinations with Biochemistry are:

  • Biochemistry with Health Promotion (C7B9)
  • Biochemistry with Sports & Exercise Science (C7C6)
  • Clinical Science with Biochemistry (B9C7)
  • Pharmacology with Biochemistry (B2C7)

What can I combine with Biochemistry?

We have over 5000 different combinations and you can choose from over 75 pathways. Please visit this page www.uel.ac.uk/combined/programmes for a full list.

Entry Requirements

240 UCAS tariff points (including two passes at A2 level including minimum grade B in A2 Biology, Chemistry or Physics). In addition to the above, we require GCSE Maths, English and Science grade C or above.

How do I apply?

If you wish to study with us full-time from September, you will need to make your application via UCAS (www.ucas.ac.uk).

If you wish to study with us part-time you can obtain an application form from our admissions department study@uel.ac.uk or apply on-line.
