Programme Specification for Advertising (Major Joint or Minor)

Campus: Docklands

Why Study Advertising as part of a Combined Honours Degree?

The BA Advertising degree reflects the interests of students who want to understand and develop skills associated with communicating in today’s ‘promotional culture’. Through a combination of approaches to the study of advertising, media, psychology and society, the degree prepares students for employment in a wide range of culture industries.

The programme offers the opportunity to study advertising, media and consumer behaviour as well as more industry-related subjects such as pitching for business and consumer research methods.

The programme offers 4 main perspectives on advertising in its social, media and cultural contexts:

  • The advertising industry: what it does, how it works and how it is changing
  • Theoretical examinations of contemporary consumer society
  • Research Methodologies and Practices: understanding and learning about social and market research techniques
  • Production and practical creativity

What will I study?

Taking this subject in combination will allow students to develop skills in media production, visual studies and business studies, including marketing.

Which modules will I study?

You can view a full guide to the modules you have to study as part of your chosen pathway, along with a full range of option modules available by viewing the Single & Combined Honours Programmes Guide for Advertising

What career opportunities are open to me if I study Advertising?

Employability is embedded throughout the delivery of the programme and students will acquire a number of transferable skills that will facilitate access to their chosen career.  In addition students are encouraged to seek relevant work experience at every opportunity in the form of both short and long-term placements.

To date students who have graduated from the programme have gone on to begin careers in fields which include: working within an advertising agency (account management, planning etc), online marketing, television production, market research, travel and tourism and a range of other interesting positions.
