QUESTION

ANSWER

I keep hearing reference to 2-subject degrees but I thought I was a combined honours student.  Is there a difference?

No.  Combined Honours is the same as 2-subject.  We feel that students understand the term 2-subject better than combined honours.  We use both terms, however, because your administrative area is known as the School of Combined Honours

I am a new Combined Honours/2-Subject Degree Student.  When do I need to come in for the first time?

The Combined Honours/2-Subject Induction is on Wednesday 30 January 2013 at 9.15am, Docklands campus in room WBG.02

I’ve missed the first day induction programme – I don’t know what I need to do.  What should I do?

You need to come to one of the Combined Honours Helpdesks – times/locations are advertised on the Combined Honours noticeboards and the door of NB2.16, and on the web at:  http://www.uel.ac.uk/combined/helpdesktimes

Can I apply for a combined honours/2-subject degree programme now?

For a limited time it may be possible.  You can come to the 30 January induction to discuss an application or you can come along to a Helpdesk – times are displayed on our noticeboards and on our webpage at http://www.uel.ac.uk/combined/helpdesktimes

After 15 February 2013 you must apply through UCAS to start a programme in September 13 only.

Can I change to a combined/2-subject degree programme if I’ve been enrolled onto a single honours programme?

It is sometimes possible to change from single to combined, and also from combined to single.  If you wish to request a change from single to combined you will need to discuss it with the School of Combined Honours or one of the Combined Honours Leaders.
If you wish to request a change to a Single Honours programme you need to get permission from the programme leader for the programme you wish to study.

How can I enrol?

You can enrol anywhere or at any time provided that you can find a pc with access to the internet. Enrolment is via UEL-Direct which you can locate at http://www.uel.ac.uk/ and then clicking on UEL DIRECT login.  If you want to enrol on the Library Trading Floor you will need to come to the Combined Honours enrolment slot (see below – When can I enrol?)

Where do I go to enrol?

All enrolment is online and you can do this from any pc with access to the internet provided that your record is ready.  If you don’t have access to a pc you will be able to complete your enrolment during the Combined Honours  induction slot.  This will be on the Trading Floor of the Library.

How do I know if I can go online and enrol?

You would have been sent an email or letter with the login instructions.  If you haven’t received an email or a letter, don’t worry.  You will be able to complete your enrolment during the Combined Honours enrolment slot (see below – when can I enrol?)

When can I enrol?

If you haven’t already done it online you can enrol during the Combined Honours enrolment slot (Wednesday 30/1/13 from 12.30-1.30pm) which has been set aside as part of your induction programme.

How do I know what my induction programme is?

Go online to the First Week web pages at  http://www.uel.ac.uk/firstweek/programmes/combined/index.htm and you will find details of your induction programme.

I have missed my enrolment slot.  What do I do?

You can enrol anywhere or at any time provided that you can find a pc with access to the internet.  If you cannot enrol on-line you should go straight to the Library Trading Floor to complete your enrolment now (as long as this is before 15 February 2013).

I need a letter to say I’ve enrolled – where can I get this?

You can print confirmation of your enrolment from My Record in UEL Direct.  If you need a letter on headed paper (or a council tax exemption certificate) you should log in to UEL-Direct, go to "My Record" and follow the link in the Student Services container to request the letter from Student Services.

I’ve enrolled online and paid my fees and only need my ID card.  When can I get my ID card?

Your ID card will be produced on Wednesday 30 January 2013 at the Combined Honours Enrolment slot (12.30-1.30pm). If you have missed this slot then you need to visit the Library Trading Floor in the Enrolment Centre – you may have to queue.

Why do I need an ID Card?

Your ID card should be displayed at all times when you are on campus.  It is required for you to access buildings and facilities, e.g. Library.  You will also need to zap your card on the card readers to register your attendance at all lectures/tutorials.

What do I need to bring as proof of my identity?

Your passport is best.  If you don’t have a passport then you will need to bring two items from the following:  birth certificate (in English), full or provisional driving licence, international driving licence or debit/credit card.

Can I leave my enrolment until next week?

Unless you have very good reason you must come along during the Combined Honours enrolment slot and complete your enrolment during Induction.

I’m paying my own fees and won’t have the money until next week.  Can I leave my enrolment until then?

No.  You need to start the online process so that we have a record of you in the student database.  You can then pay your fees and complete your enrolment when you have the money – as long as this is before 15 February 2013.

What happens if I don’t enrol until after the deadline date?

You will be charged a penalty of £100 and will have to get authorisation to enrol from your Dean of School.  If you pay your own fees the charges are even higher – go online and read the Fees Policy http://www.uel.ac.uk/scholarshipsandfees/guide.htm  to find out what you need to pay and by when.

I study at Stratford and need to come back with proof of my identity for my ID card.  How do I get back to Docklands?

There is a very good transport link between Stratford and Docklands using the DLR

How late does the Enrolment Centre stay open in the evening?

During Induction Week the Enrolment Centre is open until 6pm on Wednesday 30th January, 8pm on Thursday 31st January and 6pm on Friday 1st February.  You should aim to complete your enrolment by Friday 8th February. However, the Enrolment Centre will be open for late enrolment until 15 February 2013 with reduced opening hours.  However, you should attend your scheduled enrolment slot (see “When Can I Enrol?” above).

How do I register for my modules?

This will be done during your induction programme with the School of Combined Honours.

I missed Induction module registration – how do I know what I’m studying?

You need to come to one of the Combined Honours Helpdesks to register for your modules – times/locations are advertised on the Combined Honours noticeboards and the door of NB2.16, and on the web at:  http://www.uel.ac.uk/combined/helpdesktimes

QUESTION

ANSWER

I know that new students have an enrolment slot but how do I enrol as a continuing student?

You will have received emails during the Christmas vacation asking you to enrol on line if you need to do so.  Some students will need an assessment decision given by the School of Combined Honours due to their Semester A assessment results.  These decisions will be decided upon following the results publication and you need to check your UEL-Direct account to follow the directions you will be given by Student Records when those decisions are published.

You will not be able to enrol if you owe money to the university.

How can I check that my modules are registered?

You can log in to UEL-Direct, go to “My Record” and follow the link to module registration.  You will see the modules you have registered for.

How do I find out my timetable?

Once you have registered for your modules you can find out your timetable by checking your electronic timetable on UEL-Direct account or by visiting the relevant School’s Helpdesk.

What is UEL-Plus?

UEL-Plus is a Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) that contains teaching materials, modular and school information etc.  All students have a UEL-Plus account.  You will often hear Student Helpdesks tell students to check on UEL-Plus for module information.  The School of Combined Honours has a page on UEL Plus which holds lots of important information and guidance for Combined Honours students.

 What is Moodle?

Moodle is our new Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) that will replace UEL-Plus. It is being phased in for new students in February 2013 and for all students from September 2013.

How do I find out which modules I can study?

You can check the Guide to Undergraduate Modular Programmes.  You can access the Guide either via UEL-Direct (“My Resources”) or via the Combined Honours/2-Subject Degrees webpage:  http://www.uel.ac.uk/combined/guide  The Guide tells you your core modules and whether you can select optional modules.

I want to change some of my modules.  Can I do this?

Core modules are modules that you must study for your degree programme so these cannot be changed.  You can, however, change your option modules within the first two weeks of teaching.

I’ve been attending a module but I don’t like it – can I change it?

You can change modules within the first two weeks of teaching, but only if they are option modules.  After the first two weeks you will not be permitted to change unless there has been an error.  Students must not miss 3 consecutive classes (UEL’s attendance policy) so you cannot start attending a module after the first two weeks.

I’ve decided not to attend a module – can it be deleted?

Yes, if you request the deletion within the first two weeks, but after that you can be withdrawn from the module, but you cannot be deleted from the module.  You might also incur a charge depending on how many weeks you’ve been attending.

Do I have to do a Skills module each year?

Yes.  All students must study a Skills module at each level.  Major/Minor programmes include a skills module as a core; Joint programmes allow students to decide which of their two programmes to study their skills from.

How do I know which tutorial/seminar group I’m in for each of my modules?

Some Schools do not allocate groups.  Other Schools (eg Business)  allocate groups based on module registration and you can see which group you are in by checking your module registration on UEL-Direct.  If you are unhappy about your group allocation you must check the arrangements in place at each of the relevant Schools to request a change.  There is a definite deadline for changes with most Schools so please check with the School concerned.

Do I have a personal tutor?

You will be allocated at least one personal tutor, and in some cases you will have two. You will be allocated your personal tutors by the end of your first semester. You can check who they are by logging onto your UEL-Direct account, Module Registration.

What is the difference between my Personal Tutor, Combined Honours Leader and the Combined Honours Helpdesk?

All students have at least one personal tutor.  You can see your personal tutor to seek academic and personal advice.  Your Combined Honours Leader/s are the people who are experienced in counselling students who are studying 2 programmes.  The School of Combined Honours will support you through your studies and will often be the first port of call for you.  We can help you enrol, register your modules, act as the liaison for you with the Schools and much, much more.

I have been on a break/intermission – do I need to enrol?

Yes, you must enrol.  You must remember to register for your modules as well.

I have asked to be removed from a module but I can still see it on UEL-Plus.  Does that mean I’m still registered for it?

Not necessarily.  Removal of access to modules on UEL-Plus is not automatic.  As long as your UEL-Direct module registration shows you are no longer registered then you need not worry.

What is the difference between UEL-Plus/Moodle and UEL-Direct?

UEL-Plus/Moodle are Virual Learning Environments (VLEs) used as teaching tools; UEL-Direct is the facility we use to maintain all your student records.

How do I find out my module results?

Module results will be published on UEL-Direct at an advertised time each semester.  You should check UEL-Direct regularly.

Why can’t I log in to my student account?

There may be several reasons for this.
Check the following first:

  • If you owe monies to the university some of your access rights may have been withdrawn.  You can check out whether this is the case by looking at your personal account which will still be available. Once you pay the outstanding monies your account will be unfrozen.
  • You may have blocked your password.  In this case you need to contact 2468/IT Helpdesk to update or use the password recovery service here http://www.uel.ac.uk/it/howto/recover.htm
  • There may be an issue with your enrolment.  You can check at either of the Student Information & Enquiry desks (Docklands or Stratford) whether this is the case.

Why can’t I see my module results?

You should first check your UEL-Direct account to check that you don’t owe us any monies.
Also, at certain times of the year your assessment is hidden.

I have decided to take a break from my studies.  Can I do this?

Yes, but any break has to be agreed with the School of Combined Honours and a break request form needs to be completed.  The break request form is available on the UEL-Plus/Moodle Combined Honours page or on request via email or at a Helpdesk.  You can take a break for up to two years but you must keep us informed of what you are planning to do.

If you are an international student you must check first with the International Student Advisors that it is acceptable for you to take a break from your studies.

Can I get in touch with the School of Combined Honours without coming to a Helpdesk?

Yes.  The usual way of doing this is to email combined.honours@uel.ac.uk .  Please note that we will only use your UEL student account for email correspondence so please check it regularly, and keep it tidy so it doesn’t become full.

Do I have to come to a Helpdesk for advice?

It’s usually the best way, but you can also visit the Combined Honours Leaders who are responsible for your programme.  Their names/locations are listed on our webpage:  http://www.uel.ac.uk/combined/about/contact/
