Scholarships and Funding

What funding is available?

Tuition fee loans and maintenance (living costs) loans

Tuition Fee loans are available to help pay the cost of your tuition fees. They are paid directly to the UEL by the government and are available to most new full-time undergraduate UK and EU students. 

Maintenance loans are also available to full-time home (UK) students only to help pay for living costs (food, travel, accommodation etc).  The amount you receive depends on where you live and study.

Maintenance (living cost) grants

Maintenance grants are available to full-time home (UK) students from lower income families. Full-time students from families with annual incomes of less than £42,000 may be entitled to a grant of up to £3,250 to help pay towards living costs (food, travel, accommodation etc) while studying. The amount you receive depends on your household income. Grants do not have to repaid.

Bursaries and Scholarships

Bursaries and scholarships are additional funding that might be able for you to access, to help with the cost of university.  Bursaries, scholarships and grants, unlike loans, do not have to be paid back.  UEL students benefit from an outstanding package of bursaries and scholarships including money to spend on accommodation, travel and IT equipment, free books and graduate work placements. 

UEL Progress Bursary

The UEL Progress Bursary helps full-time and part-time undergraduate students with the financial aspects of studying – by providing funds to spend on study-related expenses such as computers, halls of residence, books etc.

The bursary is worth up to £1,100 over the course of studies.

If you are a full-time student and have successfully completed their first semester and progressed into the second, UEL will give

  • £500 in year 1, and
  • £300 in years 2 and 3

Part-time students will receive £50 for each module they study, up to a maximum of £1,100.

Free textbook offer

Full-time home undergraduate students canl benefit from the UEL free textbook offer which consists of:

  • Free skills textbooks for semester one of first year
  • One free textbook for every module of study.

National Scholarship Programme at UEL

Students from lower income families will be able to benefit from the new National Scholarships Programme. As part of this scheme UEL will be offering the new UEL NSP Bursary to eligible students progressing to study at UEL from partner institutions or our New Beginnings 2 pre-entry programme.

The bursary is worth £3,000 in total and is paid in the form of a £1,000 cash bursary and an additional £2,000 added to your progress bursary in year one.

Access to Learning Fund

The Access to Learning Fund can help students who are in exceptional financial difficulty whilst studying. Students must already be in receipt of their maximum Maintenance Loan entitlement.

International students

Funding is a key issue for anyone wishing to study in the UK. In order to help you pay your University fees and cover your living costs UEL has a dedicated, Student Money Advice and Rights Team (SMART) to help students gain access to different sources of funding.

What does SMART do?

SMART offers information and guidance on; Government funding; Student Loans, Bursaries and Scholarship schemes, money and debt management, disabled student allowance.

How can you access the SMART service?

SMART offers a combination of workshops and one-to-one meetings.  Contact them by email , phone 020 8223 6200 or if you live locally, make an appointment to go in and see them.
