UEL Chaplaincy Constitution
The Chaplaincy exists to support the University as a community of learning in which faith, social justice and personal well-being are valued and nurtured.
It does so through dialogue, worship, pastoral support, "meditation for all" - and numerous opportunities to expolore the spiritual dimensions of life.
We work and teach in partnership with all people of good-will and, in particular, through fruitful working relationships with colleagues in other support services. As a faith-based organisation, it Chaplaincy embodies the values of those communities who provide chaplains, but operates under the equal opportunities policies of the University.
The Chaplains and volunteers seek to be open to all, regardless of faith, gender, race, impairment or sexuality, to create an accepting environment and to maintain appropriate confidentiality.
The Chaplaincy is is independent of University structures but works in close parternship with other services where there is synergistic benefit. In particular we have close relationships with the UEL Student Services and Health and Well Being teams. The Chaplaincy is governed by the Chaplaincy Council.
The Chaplaincy Council is convened to support the Chaplains and promote their work by bringing together various stakeholders in a forum that encourages discussion, prayer and strategic thinking around the issues of Chaplaincy. It is through the Council that the Chaplains are accountable both to their sending bodies and to the institution.
UEL Chaplaincy Code of Good Practice
As the basis of its work, complementing the University's Equal Opportunities and Diversity policies, the UEL Multifaith Chaplaincy has adopted the code of conduct issued by the Inter Faith Network for the UK:
"In Britain today, people of many different faiths and beliefs live side by side. The opportunity lies before us to work together to build a society rooted in the values we treasure. But this society can only be built on a sure foundation of mutual respect, openness and trust. This means finding ways to live our lives of faith with integrity, and allowing others to do so too. Our different religious traditions offer us many resources for this and teach us the importance of good relationships characterised by honesty, compassion and generosity of spirit.
As members of the human family, we should show each other respect and courtesy. In our dealings with people of other faiths and beliefs this means exercising good will and:
When we talk about matters of faith with one another, we need to do so with sensitivity, honesty and straightforwardness. This means:
All of us want others to understand and respect our views. Some people will also want to persuade others to join their faith. In a multi faith society where this is permitted, the attempt should always be characterised by self-restraint and a concern for the other's freedom and dignity. This means:
Living and working together is not always easy. Religion harnesses deep emotions which can sometimes take destructive forms. Where this happens, we must draw on our faith to bring about reconciliation and understanding. The truest fruits of religion are healing and positive. We have a great deal to learn from one another which can enrich us without undermining our own identities. Together, listening and responding with openness and respect, we can move forward to work in ways that acknowledge genuine differences but build on shared hopes and values."
