From the applications we will be selecting fifteen budding entrepreneurs who we will take through our ‘Make It Real’ project. Our selection process will take into account the following:
- do you live in an Olympic host borough?
- will our support package* be able to make your idea a reality?
- is your idea well thought out and do you have a vision for how you want your business to be?
- are you ready to step into enterprise?

Opportunity for Women owned businesses! - CALL FOR EXPRESSIONS OF INTEREST (EOIs)
The Make It Global Project is a £1.5million ERDF Project that aims to support women-led SMEs in London to internationalise. The project aims to achieve business growth and sustainable internationalisation through the realisation of women-led business potential, capabilities and opportunities.
Led by UEL’s Centre of Excellence for Women’s Entrepreneurship (CEWE) and delivered in partnership with the European Business Network (EBN), Newham College of Further Education and Kingston University, the project will offer SMEs the opportunity to benefit from a six-stage package of specialist support which will provide access to transnational business networks, experts within the HE/FE knowledge base and brokered entry to new markets.
About this EOI
We are looking to identify a number of business support experts who can provide specialist support to women-led SMEs to support their internationalisation on either a 1-2-1 or one-to-many basis. The selected organisations/individuals will become part of a Consultants Pool for the Make It Global project. Consultants will be selected to work with an SME (or group of SMEs) according to their areas of expertise and the business support needs of beneficiary SMEs.
We are looking for organisations or individuals with expertise in the following areas:

European Business Network (EBN) - Tools Forum
UEL are delighted to be hosting EBN's Tools Forum on 18th and 19th October. The events is themed around business support/innovation and will be a great chance to get new ideas from experts from across Europe and network to build new partnerships.

Global Entrepreneurship Week!
Global Entrepreneurship Week will be here soon (November 12- 18th) and packed full of events for all entrepreneurs.
Youth Business International, the hosts of Global Entrepreneurship Week 2012 in the UK, would like to collect entrepreneurs’ views on the state of entrepreneurship in the UK and their opinions on how this will change in the future. They are looking to use the results to publicise Global Entrepreneurship Week in the media and online.
This survey - which you can find at www.surveymonkey.com/s/GEWsurvey -will only take around 5 minutes to complete and can be completed by anyone who has set up a business which has been running for two years or more, and has at least five employees. Business Owners can fill in their company’s details or fill it in anonymously.
They have asked CEWE to promote this survey to our members - so please do complete! If you leave your email address they will email you a copy of the research findings in November to share with your own contacts and clients.

Procurement: Share your views!
The Women’s Enterprise Policy Group (WEPG), which looks to influence policy to support women in the UK to start and grow their businesses, is currently undertaking a piece of research into procurement. If you are a business owner with experience of trying to access supply chains, we want to hear from you.
By completing an online survey, to share your experiences you can help inform a piece of research in this area. The purpose of the survey is to understand the views and opinions of business owners regarding procurement processes in both the public and private sector. The research specifically seeks to explore whether the experiences and attitudes of women owned businesses differ from those of male owned businesses. The survey will take 5-10minutes to complete and can be accessed through the link below.

Take the ‘Ambitions Bus’ to business success!
NatWest has taken to the road with their ‘Ambitions Bus’, bringing free business advice to entrepreneurs looking to start their own company and existing SME owners. NatWest has worked closely with London enterprise agencies to understand and tailor free workshops sessions to their audience, and after a UK tour the bus is now coming to UEL. This free event is taking place on Thursday 8 March, 10am – 4pm, at Knowledge Dock on Docklands Campus, and is open to all staff students and graduates looking for advice, development and networking opportunities. Advisors now include representatives from; HMRC, UKTI, Natwest (including Natwest 'Women in Business') and Picthme! As part of UEL’s commitment to support women's entrepreneurship, the Centre of Excellence for Women’s Entrepreneurship recently sponsored the London Chamber of Commerce’s Women in Business Networking Lunch.
Around 75 guests attended last week’s event, which saw leading designer and retailer Cath Kidston (pictured) share her top tips for succeeding in business, during a Q&A session with the audience. As well as remaining Creative Director of Cath Kidston Ltd, Cath was awarded an MBE for services to business in February 2010 as part of the Queen’s New Year Honours List.
On 16th June 2011, CEWE held it's second CEWE Seminar The Challenge of Starting Up. The event focused in on the challenges and barriers faced by women entrepreneurs starting up in business. In a rousing presentation that left the audience in no doubt about the importance of prudent financial management, Deborah Morton-Dare, from Faculty-One Business Training said: “Making a profit isn’t enough; managing the cash flow properly is essential. Managing the cash rigorously will make the difference in determining whether or not your business survives.”

Award winning entrepreneur, Lisa Newton from Boogles Ltd joined CEWE in May to talk to an enthusiastic audience made up of female UEL students and graduates to talk about her experiences in setting up a business, and to pass on some pearls of wisdom. Her honest, yet encouraging advice was welcomed by the audience who found the session very motivating. One graduate commented “I thought the session was inspiring, helpful and a really productive use of my time. Attending has really given me a boost in self-confidence that I can set up a business on my own”. The event was organised by the Employability and Enterprise Team at UEL in conjunction with CEWE, and is part of a series of events and services aimed at aspiring and existing entrepreneurs to help them achieve their goals.
