LABs

PC Lab

60 Pcs running Windows XP using the UEL Desktop which provides a range of applications from Office to Adobe CS and CAD applications (Microstation, Autocad, Rhino, 3D Studio and others)

Mac Lab

The school is developing virtual reality labs, with a space currently being developed for research and teaching in VR.  UEL is also a partner in the VIPA European project in E-Learning - the virtual campus for European architects.

Simlab

The School also accommodates the Simulation Laboratory  providing computational solutions to local architects where students can write macros for projects of practical relevance funded by EU regeneration grants. Current simlab projects include automatic component extraction algorithms for generating cutting data for fabrication, and complex rendering using dedicated hardware.

Illustrations of consensus

This year we are trying to attempt a new way of combining the Master’s in Computing & Design with a diploma unit. As part of the general pedagogical principle of “learning by doing” we will work on developing a design approach through programming, so that students will have the tools necessary to explore design ideas through the medium of computing. If you can code, then you can define models of emergence and self organisation for real, not just talking about it but fully in control.

One of our key concerns is synchronicity or simultaneity, and working this way with local rules to generate global form. Through parallel synthesis of decisions by a multitude of decision makers, a result can be achieved that is less of a designer-made compromise and more true to the complexity of the architectural condition.

The theory and design components are taught through a series of 4 workshops (described in the handout) where we will cover form making in material, physical models of complex control systems, evolutionary generation of components and embodiment in the real world via rapid prototyping, and an immersive environment. As part of the computer based manufacturing interest, in the spring we will visit some cutting edge fabricators in central Europe.
