About Special Needs

Special Needs is an exciting and innovative subject area which will enable you to develop personally and professionally. Our tutors are experienced practitioners, offering you the opportunity to acquire knowledge and understanding of special educational needs, autism, disability, behaviour and dyslexia within an inclusive and international context. This will enable you to demonstrate skills, knowledge and understanding transferable to the workplace, enhancing your employability and future career progression.

The issue of inclusion is central in the current debate concerning children with special educational needs and this degree will give you opportunity to explore the issues in depth. You will also be able to study particular special needs in greater detail in order to understand responses to the learner. You will study the context in which children are defined, diagnosed and labelled as having special education needs and consider the challenging concepts of equal opportunity, inclusion, children’s rights, working in partnership and a holistic understanding of childhood.

The BA (Hons) Special Needs and Inclusive Education programme can be studied as a single honours or combined honours degree. Graduates from the programme have gone on to develop careers in various education contexts, within charity organisations, in private enterprise and local government.  Many graduates build upon their degree to enter the professions of teaching, social work, speech therapy.

Following the successful completion of the degree, students can apply for UEL's Primary PGCE programme or apply for the new MA Special Educational Needs programme. The Master’s programme offers the opportunity to extend the depth and scope of understanding special needs within a professional context.
