About Social Work

We offer a number of programmes dedicated to providing high quality education for people intending to be social workers or who already are social workers or engaged in allied professions. It is distinctive in the Cass School of Education and Communities in that most of our programmes incorporate or develop a professional qualification. The University of East London is accredited by the General Social Care Council to award professional qualifications in social work alongside its academic degrees. Besides offering learning and teaching in social work, there is a dedicated Centre for Social Work Research and we have excellent connections with the Tavistock and Portman NHS Foundation Trust’s social work staff.

We also have strong links with local social work agencies, and all staff who teach in the field are themselves professionally qualified and registered social workers. Qualifying programmes all meet government requirements which include stipulated numbers of supervised practice days in local statutory and voluntary social work agencies. In addition, there are a number of other requirements which our programmes have to meet:

  • Department of Health curriculum requirements
  • accreditation and validation requirements of the GSCC: accreditation of the University to award professional qualifications, and validation procedures in relation to specific programmes
  • QAA subject benchmarks for Social Policy and Administration of Social Work (2008)
  • National Occupational Standards for Social Work
  • General Social Care Council Code of Practice for Social Care Employees
  • UEL Academic Framework
