Pre-ITT communication course

Enrolling for June 2013

If you are planning to teach maths, physics, chemistry or computer science, you may be able to enrol on our specially designed pre-ITT communication course.

What is the pre-ITT communication course?

Our communication course begins in June and takes place before you start your teacher training.  It will help you gain confidence by developing and practising the skills you need to communicate effectively as a teacher. It is a three week course with up to 10 days of practical experience to allow you the opportunity to practise the skills you have learnt.

For example:

  • Verbal dexterity – the ability to explain complex scientific ideas in a number of different ways, and being able to think on your feet.
  • Oral communication – the ability to alter tone and pace when speaking in order to communicate with impact.
  • Non-verbal communication – body language, eye contact and so on.
  • Understanding language – how to converse with young people, and the language they may use.

Who is the course for?

The UEL communication course is available to applicants intending to begin teacher training in 2013/14 in maths, physics, chemistry or computer science. To be eligible for our course, you must have a conditional offer for a postgraduate ITT course, subject to the completion of a communication course.

In addition, you must hold or be predicted either a 2:1 or a 1st class undergraduate degree.

This course is intended to support candidates who have good subject knowledge. You are not eligible for this course if you are enrolled on a subject knowledge enhancement (SKE) course.

Funding

The course is funded by the Teaching Agency, so there are no fees.

How do I apply for the UEL communication course?

You should first apply to an ITT programme at UEL or with another course provider. If the provider thinks that you have the attributes to make a good teacher, they may offer you a conditional ITT place and refer you to UEL.

Booking Information

Places are limited and allocated by need and availability. You must be able to commit to the full duration of this course. To make an application or to make an enquiry, please contact our administrator on 020 8223 6380 or email: enhancements@uel.ac.uk
