Physics Subject Knowledge Enhancement Course
A route into physics teaching for non-specialists
Good physics teachers are in very short supply. However, there are many enthusiastic graduates with the potential to be specialist physics teachers but who are insufficiently qualified to enter straight into initial teacher training with physics as their specialism. The Physics Subject Knowledge Enhancement Course at UEL is designed to enable more people to become physics teachers.
Subject knowledge enhancement courses are intensive programmes for graduates who want to teach physics but whose degree is not in physics or whose specialist subject knowledge needs deepening prior to training for qualified teacher status (QTS). The University of East London has designed this six month (24 week) physics subject knowledge enhancement course, funded by the National College for Teaching and Leadership, to equip you with the skills and subject knowledge to teach science to 11-18 years olds, with physics as your specialism. Upon completion of the course successful students will continue on to initial teacher training at UEL or another training provider.
Eligibility
This course is for graduates who want to teach Physics but whose degree may not be in Physics or whose specialist subject knowledge needs deepening before they can begin their teacher training.
To be eligible for the course you must:
- hold a conditional offer from an initial teacher training (ITT) provider in London or the South East of England before you join the subject knowledge enhancement course. Please note, there is no direct entry onto the course.
- be a home (UK) student who is eligible for funding from the TDA. You can find further information on the TDA website.
Typical minimum entry requirements
- GCSEs in Mathematics and English at grade C or above (or equivalent)
- An honours degree, 2.2 or above, from a United Kingdom Higher Education Institution or an equivalent qualification
- Some experience of studying physics to A-level standard and beyond. This could be through holding an A-level in physics, having an element of physics in your degree programme and/or occupational experience of the subject
- Motivation - applicants should have a strong desire to teacher physics at secondary school level
- Applicants must have already been offered a place on a programme of initial teacher training (PGCE, GTP or SCITT)
