Special Educational Needs and Disabilities

Teachers must be able to adapt their teaching to respond to the strengths and needs of all their pupils. They also need to know when and how to differentiate appropriately for learners and lessons  need to take into account pupils’ interests and backgrounds if there is to be real impact on learning and motivation.

An understanding of individual need includes those with special educational needs; those of high ability; those with English as an additional language and those with disabilities and be able to use and evaluate distinctive teaching approaches to engage and support them.

Special Educational Needs and Disabilities  is a current government priority for education. Here are some resources which will set the context for current national policy.   

Department for Education (DfE) Special Educational Needs Section

DfE - SEND Green Paper: 'Support and aspiration: A new approach to special educational needs and disability'. (Information on the special educational needs and disability (SEND) green paper).

DfE - Training for Teaching SEND Students: Information on materials to support the continuing professional development of the teachers of children and young people with severe, profound and complex learning difficulties and disabilities in response to recommendations made in the Salt Review.

DfE - Advanced Training Materials: Materials to support  the continuing professional development of teachers of children and young people with autism; dyslexia; speech, language and communication needs; emotional, social and behavioural difficulties and moderate learning difficulties.
