This programme will prepare you to work in a primary school as a specialist mathematics teacher. You will develop high levels of mathematics subject knowledge and mathematics-specific teaching skills. You will also focus on collaborative practice and leadership, taking responsibility not only for developing your own expertise in mathematics but also for developing that of other non-specialist peers.
The programme will enable you to develop expert knowledge and understanding in supporting pupil development in mathematics across the primary Key Stages. The programme will also cover pedagogy, subject leadership, curriculum development and enhancement, resourcing, and planning and assessment in relation to mathematics teaching and learning. You will be working in primary settings so you will also develop a good understanding of how to support pupil development in literacy and phonics.
UEL-based input on the mathematics specialist programme will draw on expertise from our primary and secondary ITE and CPD teams, mathematics lead teachers in our key Partnership schools and academics from other UEL Schools with mathematical expertise. During your school-based training you will be mentored by outstanding practitioners.
After successful completion home students will be recommended for Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).
The programme runs over 38 weeks from September to July. Eighteen weeks is spent in partner schools, generally split into three blocks of school-based training. The remaining time is spent in seminars, lectures, tutorials and assignment activities, designed to support your professional development.
