Primary Mathematics and Early Number

Trainee teachers at UEL develop the understanding that “a high quality mathematics education provides a foundation for understanding the world, the ability to reason mathematically, and a sense of excitement and curiosity about the subject” (Draft National Curriculum for Mathematics, 2012).  Trainees are taught to develop pupils’ mathematics skills creatively, enabling pupils to develop fluency in procedures and sound conceptual understanding in order to solve increasingly complex problems.  Trainees learn approaches that best help pupils progress from counting to calculating, reason about numbers, work with measures and acquire the skills that underpin mathematical learning and applications in school and beyond.
