The Cass School of Education and Communities works in very close partnership with schools and colleges to support initial teacher development. We are one of London's leading centres for teacher training, offering highly successful programmes for Primary, Secondary and Post-Compulsory levels.
We are the only Initial Teacher Education Provider in the country to meet the Equality and Diversity and Disability benchmark (source: The Guardian). Our partnership has a reputation for excellence in preparing teachers to educate young people in the multi-ethnic and multilingual culture of urban schools, and are one of the UK’s leading providers of initial teacher training for students from minority ethnic backgrounds. We are also one of the leading universities for recruiting men to train to teach at both primary and secondary levels.

There are two School Direct programmes: School Direct Training and School Direct Salaried
This training route is an opportunity for schools to 'grow your own' staff, sharing the training and/or the employment commitment across a group of schools, supported by UEL as the accredited ITT provider. UEL has extensive experience of teacher training and over 500 new teachers graduate from UEL each year.
School Direct is open to all graduates and is funded by tuition fees paid by the trainee. In a model similar to PGCE, a trainee may receive a bursary that will in whole or part offset the tuition fees. Further information about bursaries is available on the DfE website - funding pages.
The School Direct (salaried) programme replaces the Graduate Teacher Programme and is intended for high quality career changers. There is an expectation that candidates for the School Direct (salaried) route will have at least a 2.1 classification for their first degree, and they must demonstrate three years' career experience.
Trainees on School Direct (salaried) will be paid, as a minimum, on the lowest point of the unqualified teacher scale (currently £19 893 for Inner London). There will no longer be a 'supernumerary' requirement, as there is with the current GTP. The Teaching Agency provides funding, which the school can use to subsidise the trainee's salary and/or training.
