Brief biography

My BSc in sociology was awarded at Kingston University and my PGCE (social science 11 – 18 age range) was awarded at the Institute of Education, University of London. Since then I have taught both sociology and psychology for 14 years in secondary schools and Sixth Form Colleges in Surrey, Kent and London. I came to the position at UEL as an experienced sociology textbook writer, as well as a successful deliverer of post-16 sociology INSET courses across the country.

I have worked in the multi-cultural, urban environment of Newham in east London for eight years in the Post Compulsory sector as teacher of sociology, social science manager of a large Sixth Form College and as a cross-college manager responsible for Teaching and Learning. In 2007 I completed managing a ‘highly commended’ Beacon Award action research project in transferable teaching skills. As the teaching and learning development manager of a large, diverse Sixth Form College I managed a team of Advanced Teaching Practitioners, as well as being awarded the status myself, coordinated and delivered action research projects and was responsible for the coordination of e-learning.

Activities and responsibilities

As Senior Lecturer in Post Compulsory Education and Training (PCET) at The Cass School of Education and Communities I am involved in developing and teaching across modules on both the full time and part time PGCE PCET and the Cert Ed. My work also involves working collaboratively with local partners and providers of post compulsory education both within our consortium colleges and within London as a whole where trainees are placed for their teaching practice. I have an interest in podcasting and in the use of emergent technologies as a tool for research, mentor training and capturing the learners’ voice. My research interests also include a commitment to participatory and inclusive action research as a means to develop teacher professionalism and practice.

Teaching Fellow of the University, involved in supporting a number of short-term Enhancement Projects looking at issues of e-learning, online marking and assessment.

Leader in Learning and Teaching for the Cass School of Education and Communities where I represent and manage issues of pedagogy and assessment within the Senior Leadership Team.

Programme Leader for the PCET PGCE/Cert Ed provision (including both in-service and pre-service provision)

Co-Research Group Leader for the Teacher Education Research Group, Cass School of Education and Communities.

Journals

Along with Professor Jean Murray (also Cass School of Education and Communities, UEL) I am the Guest Editor of a forthcoming Special Edition of the Routledge journal Professional Development in Education (PDiE) – the journal of the International Professional Development Association (IPDA). See the Routledge website  for this Special Edition here. The call for papers is for the edition ‘Using Emerging Technologies to Develop Professional Learning’. Along with my colleague Gerry Czerniawski I am the Guest Editor of the July 2012 Special Edition of Management in Education (MiE) a Sage journal of BELMAS. This special edition addresses issues related to educational leadership informed by the Student Voice. This Issue was published as Volume 26, number 3 titled ‘The Space Between – Positioning Student Voice at the heart of Leadership in Education’.

Other interests include - Currently working towards EdD – provisional title of research: “Tinkering with the tools of their trade: A proposed qualitative study of changing choices and emerging professional identities amongst Newly Qualified Teachers in the post-compulsory sector.”

External professional interests:

I am currently an External Examiner for the lifelong learning Additional Diploma Provision at Greenwich University.

I am a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (HEA).

Consultancy for schools, colleges and other institutions and organisations in the lifelong learning sector on issues of: e-learning; assessment practices; motivating learners; thinking skills; action research.

The paper was 'Exploring the Boundary Crossing and Identity Formation of Novice Teachers in a Global Metropolis: Training and Teaching in East London'. Held at Freie Universität Berlin, Germany, 13-16 September, 2011.

Paper presented at the international ‘Re-thinking digital ethnographies’ conference in Porto, Portugal 2nd May – 5th May, 2011. The conference, organised by ECER Network 19 (ethnography) looked at: ‘Rethinking Educational Ethnography: Researching On-line Communities and Interactions’. My paper ‘Using online communities, wikis and blogs to capture the ‘boundary crossing’ of novice teachers. An action research enquiry on the margins of digital ethnography’, drew upon work undertaken with the PCET trainees here at UEL. The conference took place at the Educational Research and Intervention Centre (CIIE) - Faculty of Psychology and Educational Sciences, University of Porto. See here.

Paper presented at the International Conference “Crossing Boundaries: The multiple roles of trainers and teachers in vocational education and training”, run by The Network of Trainers in Europe – see here. The event was held on 14-15 October 2010 in Kostelec near Prague, Czech Republic.
