After completing a degree in Sociology (First Class Hons.), I went on to do a PGCE and then an MSc in Political Sociology. My first job was in the 16-19 sector, where I have spent most of my teaching career. I have taught on a variety of courses including A Levels (sociology, politics and psychology), and on vocational courses such as GNVQ Health and Social Care. I was head of the Department of Sociology at Palmer’s College from 1999-2005, and have been a link tutor/mentor for PGCE students in association with the Institute of Education (1995-2005).
Other relevant experience includes being a staff governor (Palmer’s College 1999-2003) and an A Level examiner.
I joined UEL initially as an hourly paid lecturer in the Cass School of Education, but in 2008 I became a permanent member of staff teaching on a variety of programmes including Citizenship, Education and Community Development, Education Studies and Early Childhood Studies.
I am currently Programme Leader for BA (Hons) Education Studies at the Cass School of Education and Communities
BA (Hons) Education Studies
I am currently examining the ways of enhancing the student experience of higher education through the use of ‘emotional intelligence’ (Golman 1995, Harrel Carson 1996, Mortiboys 2005).
