Simon joined the social work team at UEL in September 2005. Before this he was an Assistant Director in the voluntary sector with responsibility for developing good and innovative practice in work with adults with learning difficulties. He has extensive and diverse social work and care management experience in the voluntary and statutory sectors. Simon has been a professional social work tutor and an associate lecturer in community care for The Open University in London and has also been a practice teacher/assessor/educator. Simon acted-up as Principal Lecturer and Head of Social Work at UEL for the academic year 2010-2011.
Simon's strongest area of interest is in social work with people with learning difficulties particularly in developing narrative research and practice approaches. He has strong links with The Centre for Narrative Research (CNR) at UEL and is also a member of the Social History of Learning Disability research group based at the Open University (http://www.open.ac.uk/hsc/ldsite/).
A further area of interest is in some dissenting and marginalised histories and experiences of Jewish people in UK and links between these and wider anti-oppressive perspectives. Simon is co-editor of a dissident secular Jewish magazine
