I started at UEL in 2005 following a long career as a music teacher in Suffolk and Buckinghamshire.
I trained as a teacher at St. John's College in York from 1974-1978 where I gained a Certificate in Education followed by a B.Ed. (Hons.) (University of Leeds). I then started my teaching career in Middle schools in Bury St. Edmunds in Suffolk where I also sang in the St. Edmundsbury Cathedral Chior.
In 1984, I moved to Buckinghamshire where I taught at a combined school (primary/middle) and then transferred into secondary education. Altogether, I have been teaching in music education for 27 years across both primary and secondary phases, most recently as Head of Performing Arts at a Buckinghamshire Secondary School for 16 years. During this time I gained a Masters in Music Technology in Music Education from Reading University and a teaching diploma from Trinity College of Music (teaching composing skills).
I have also, at different points in my career, led CPD for music teachers, acted as mentor to trainees, authored on an Open University web-site for music education CPD, and been a visiting lecturer for the University of Cumbria.
I am a pianist and singer, currently singing in my local Choral Society. I have also spent extensive periods as a local orchestra conductor and worship leader at church. I am very much a believer that music is a core subject - important for all young people and central to their lives and to education.
I am currently part-way through doctoral studies where my research is exploring "music teachers' biographies, their understanding of musicality and its implications for secondary music education".
Other areas of expertise and interest include the delivery of CPD to music teachers (primary and secondary), the application of music technology in music education, composing, curriculum planning and assessment, and the integration of the performing arts subjects (drama, music, dance). My principle musical expertise centres on piano playing, singing and composing.
A summary of recent activity and publications include:
Doctoral Studies: 'Music teachers' biographies, their understanding of musiciality and its implications for secondary music education'.
